I confess to having an affinity for Japanese animation, or "anime" as it's called (to all the laymen out there). I was wondering if there was anyone else out there on Free Republic that like anime. Here are my picks:
Cowboy Bebop: I started watching this outstanding series when they started playing on the "Adult Swim" program on the Cartoon Network. This is probably one of the best I have ever seen. Even though it is shown in a time slot meant strictly for adults, they still edited it a bit. There's no nudity, but plenty of violence, and sexual situations. I love it for its concept, characters, and the music, which has a lot of cool jazz in it. It's pretty funny at times too. I'd like to get the boxed set of DVD's someday. Bounty hunters, guns, space fighters, great scenery, great music, and stories. What more could you want????
Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team - This was a mini-series, but a great one. It mixed the story of soldiers on the front line of a bitter war, with a love story. Great animation and plot.
Iria: Zeiram the Animation: Another miniseries. I first saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel. I now have it on tape. I like it for its plot and characters mainly.
Tenchi Muyo!: This was a funny mini-series. An clutzy Earth teenager gets suddenly surrounded by several alien women, most of whom are in love with him, in a series of incidents. You can imagine the things that happen next!
Dragonball Z: This series is more for kids, but this is just pure entertainment to me. Martial arts, kick@$$ fights, and a peculiar plot. Not much more.
Blue Submarine No. 6: Only like 6 episodes long, this was really cool because it mixed computer animation and traditional animation pretty flawlessly. Scary future concepts too.
Outlaw Star:An all-around good series. Funny stories, good space battles, more bounty hunters, and good plot. I'd like to see the unedited version sometime.
All the other anime I like that I don't want to get into detail about: Robotech, Voltron, Ghost in the Shell, others
Tell me what you think, and if you like anime, what you have seen and like.

Well, I don't know about series, but Ninja scroll was good.

I've watched anime almost only on Cartoon Network and more often with my kids. I've only seen a few episodes of Cowboy Bebop, but I've been impressed. Tenchi Muyo was usually very good. As for DBZ -- well, my teenaged daughter dyed her hair blue to be Bulma for Halloween (and has since decided to wear green hair for while) and my then five year-old son went as Gotin(sp? -- Goku's younger son). So the kids definitely like it.

Must be an awfully slow news day to post this.

Ghost in the Shell was very cool (except for that weird Japanese singing!). Ninja Scroll in my mind is probably the best, though. Princess Mononoke was also very well done, although the there was no real conflict in the film (no real good guys & bad guys, all sides were mixed.)

I was into "StarBlazers" a few years ago . BTW wasn't "Speed Racer" one the earliest example of Anime?

Vision of Escaflowne is the most gorgeous anime I've ever seen. Plus, the music is wonderful, the characters well-done, and the storyline is great. Better yet, it's readily available in the US - and subtitled! (I think dubbed anime is a crime against humanity.)
I also like Lost Universe, from the same people who did Slayers. It's sci-fi, with an interesting mix of anime and CGI, plus it's hilarious but serious at the same time.
And for downright weird, This is Greenwood is tops. It's about a boy's boarding school, six episodes based on a manga. Well worth the effort of tracking it down.

I forgot about Princess Mononoke! I even have a movie poster of it right in front of me! A good friend of mine went to Japan a couple of summers ago, and got me a copy of it in Japanese before it came out on video here. I love that movie, even with some of the messages in it.
"Speed Racer" was probably the first anime I saw. I watched that when I was really little. It got on my mom's nerves. Oh well, I haven't seen it in a while, but I bet I could still appreciate it. I saw a parody of it once on Cartoon Network (on Dexter's Lab).

I guess, but I've seen all the "What's your favorite music/movie?" and associate threads here, and I thought this would be a nice addendum, for all the "anime geeks" on here. ;-)

"Irresponsible Captain Tylor". A very funny take on many anime character stereotypes, plus numerous inside jokes aimed at other anime ("Yamato", "Gundam", etc.).

I love that stuff to, being introduced to it by college students, and later on my own kids. I own the Princess Mononoke dvd, and hope to find more by Miyazaki. My kids were into Pokemon and Sailor Moon for a while, though that's passed. I've perused the shelves at the local video store and seen many of those mentioned, but was shied away from their apparently mature content.
They are ages 8 and 5, my kids; I wondered if anyone can offer recommendations appropriate for them? I don't mind violence if not too graphic, but no overt sexuality if you please. Thanks

I love the old Warner Brothers and MGM cartoons too! I grew up on that stuff! I particularly like Tex Avery's stuff.

Evangelion!
To: null and void
I haven't seen enough of Evangelion to have a complete opinion of it. We had an all-night marathon of it in one of the lounges of the dorms this semester. I only saw about 6 episodes. I thought they were good.
