The Virginian, by Owen Wister. Made into movie starring Gary Cooper. High Noon was also derived from that book, one of the best American novels ever written, and Cooper starred in that as well, but without the book's most famous line.

So, sort of non-committal?

"Smile when you say that." It is the warning rattle, meaning you can call me anything (in the book it was son of a b., here it is "California girl") if you are my friend and smile when you say it, but them's fightin' words if meant derrogatorily.

Can't find the URL to post the counties map. A majority of the land mass in California, including the Central Valley where I live, went for Bush, hence, is Red Country.
