Because when "Pretty Woman" was made, she had a nice a$$ and probably smoked whatever a producer would offer her.
Sorry to be blunt and crass but it is most likely the truth.
Before Pretty Woman she did a very good job in Steel Magnolias as the pregnant daughter who dies. I think she had a best supporting Oscar nomination for her work.
