It may have cost us the series, but I do understand why he did it. Yanks got some knocks on Schilling in the 7th and maybe Brenley thought that if he left Schilling in, the Yanks would knock him around some more in the 8th. If Brenley had left Schilling in and he coughed up runs to the Yanks, the detractors would have said, what do you expect from a guy pitching on only 3 days rest.

In hindsight, Brenley probably should have let him start the 8th and then only took him out if he got into trouble.

As a Die-hard D-backs fan (I know, is that possible for a team that's only 4 years old) I'm still root, root, rooting for the Snakes, but it's obvious they've got a tougher road to travel now...

GO D-BACKS!!!!

If it was me (I know, I know, hindsight is 20/20), I would've given Schilling the ball and said, "You're in there 'til a man reaches. If someone gets aboard I'm going with Kim." I just think a competitor as great as Schilling deserves a chance to win it.

interseting that he takes out a starter out (after 88 pitches) that is USED to throwing 100+ pictches a game, and leaves in his closer (usually throws 1 inning) to throw 62 pitches ?

If I have a chance to go up 3-1 in the Series, Schilling pitches til his arm falls off....oh well.....the yanks can't beat johnson, so it looks like a 7 game series.

I want to add to my previous post. I also would like to see the D-backs win because there is a distinct Giant flavor to the team.

If you have been a Phoenix baseball fan for many years, you know that the Giants AAA farm club was there for decades before MLB awarded the city a franchise of its own. You have seen over the years Bob Brenly and Matt Williams and third base coach Chris Speier come up through the ranks to reach the frozen Mecca that was Candlestick Park (no, I don't call it 3Com Park). Giants fans recognize coach Bob Melvin as the catcher that platooned with Brenly during the late eighties.

Then there is the occasional bench coach, and the guru of the split-fingered fastball, Roger Craig, who has a special place in the hearts of diehard Giants fans. He is the only manager to bring a National League pennant (1989) to San Francisco since 1962. I saw my first Giants game in 1972, the year they traded Willie Mays for minor-league stiffs and cash. It wasn't until Craig's second year at the helm in 1987 -- when they won the National League West -- could I call the Giants champions of anything.

Bob Brenly was one of my fave Giants players, and since he couldn't catch the last strike of the World Series, I hope he can drink the champagne along with the guy who does.
