Open Column - Misguided pacifism paves the way for tyranny

Editor, the Tribune: I just read your Oct. 8 article regarding the statements of the representatives of Mid-Missouri Peaceworks, St. Francis Community, Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation, Mid-Missouri Veterans for Peace, the Columbia Interfaith Peace Alliance and the Students for Progressive Action at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Having lived in Afghanistan, I’ve learned a great deal about the situation there. My daily work keeps me up on the situation in Afghanistan, and I have been continually involved in peace initiatives for Afghanistan since 1988. In 1999, we opened the Center of Peace and Hope in Christ for Afghanistan in Fairfax, Va.

The people of Afghanistan have lived under the tyranny of communism and war for 13 years, then under complete chaos and further war for four years and now under the tyranny of the Taliban for more than five years. Hopefully, the current actions of the U.S. government will let the Afghan people finally establish a government of their own choosing. After 22 years of horror, they have one of the greatest opportunities in their history to determine their own destiny.

The representatives of these peace groups mentioned in your article seem to be quite ignorant of the issues regarding tyranny and righteousness, and they fail to understand the difference between justice and revenge. It is folks like these who actually pave the way for tyrants to seize power through their misguided peace vigils and promotion of the foolish ideology of pacifism.

Thanks for posting this thread. Here is what Patrick Henry had to say about pacifists as he and others struggled to protect us from King George! "Pacifists are among the most immoral of men. They make no distinction between aggression and defense. Therefore, pacifism is one of the greatest allies an aggressor can have! " by Patrick Henry
