I think that part of the reason the liberal media (and traditionalist religious conservatives like Joe Sobran) have so much sympathy for the Arabs is that to a large extent they agree with the charge that our society is vulgar and decadent. Of course, in the case of liberals, they bear a large share of the blame for the decadence, but liberals may have an unconscious desire to be chastened by a morally superior opponent, and the Arabs may fill the psychological role of "noble savages" who will force us to finally be good. In other words, liberals secretly wanted to be spanked by a high-heel-wearing Yasser Arafat.
