"Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No Hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too..."
Et cetera, et cetera.
Of all the whiney-assed, inappropriate, totally OUT OF TOUCH things he could have come up with, WHY THIS? WHAT A BURNED OUT, BRAIN DAMAGED, OLD HIPPIE PUNK! SEND HIM BACK TO ONTARIO! But that won't happen. He has a career to resurrect, just like Mariah Carey. Who the Hell invited this guy? David Geffen?
Exhibit A:
Every Grain of Sand by Bob Dylan
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere,
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair.
Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake,
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break.
In the fury of the moment I can see the Master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand.
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear,
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer.
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay.
I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name.
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand.
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light,
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space,
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face.
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me.
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand.
Exhibit B:
Ring Them Bells by Bob Dylan
Ring them bells, ye heathen
From the city that dreams,
Ring them bells from the sanctuaries
Cross the valleys and streams,
For they're deep and they're wide
And the world's on its side
And time is running backwards
And so is the bride.
Ring them bells St. Peter
Where the four winds blow,
Ring them bells with an iron hand
So the people will know.
Oh it's rush hour now
On the wheel and the plow
And the sun is going down
Upon the sacred cow.
Ring them bells Sweet Martha,
For the poor man's son,
Ring them bells so the world will know
That God is one.
Oh the shepherd is asleep
Where the willows weep
And the mountains are filled
With lost sheep.
Ring them bells for the blind and the deaf,
Ring them bells for all of us who are left,
Ring them bells for the chosen few
Who will judge the many when the game is through.
Ring them bells, for the time that flies,
For the child that cries
When innocence dies.
Ring them bells St. Catherine
From the top of the room,
Ring them from the fortress
For the lilies that bloom.
Oh the lines are long
And the fighting is strong
And they're breaking down the distance
Between right and wrong.

This guy's brain was fried to a crisp a long time ago.
I suppose most of these people meant well, but the tackiness is in them right down to the bone. Surely a little "Sinatra-style" covert philanthropy would have become all of them much, much better. If the above reply (about money raised going to PC racism s&!t) is true, then I can't express my disgust in words... even my worst "hit my thumb with a hammer" vocabulary will fail me.
Burnie or not, Neil was (WAS) the only guy left from "the old days" who I would still cough up large $$$ to see. Sigh... I guess I can just plan on buying some ammo with it.
Ed
Wretched bump.
1) "Bridge Over Troubled Water" needs to sung with two people, not solo. What, is the bitterness between Simon and Garfunkel so bad that Art wouldn't show.
2) Celine Dion has the most beautiful voice in the world. Hope her rendition of God Bless America is available commercially.
3) If you have a number of actors and musicians clamoring for an event like this, why on God's green earth would you have Willie Nelson sing the finale by himself. Couldn't afford enough microphones for the others?
4) And note to Chris Rock - if you're not going to sing, don't just sit there like a jackass staring at the camera. Move offstage, for crying out loud.
5) As much as I admire Clint Eastwood, there is nobody on the planet who can deliver a "We're coming for you" speech better than Charlton Heston. It also doesn't help if Eastwood was wearing a button-up sweater worn like he came out of a nursing home.
6) Have you ever seen a more forced display of false emotion (aside from a Clinton) than from Julia Roberts. Nice "move the camera closer to see if she'll start to cry" shot.
7) Why do lesbian musicians want to play with old musicians? First k.d. lang and Roy Orbison, not Etheridge and b.b. king.
8) Billy Joel rocks.
9) Hey Tom Petty, Grizzly Adams called and he wants his beard back.
All in all, a pretty lame effort. But then again, what else could we expect from a bunch of entertainment lefties who wouldn't know true patriotism if it bit them in the ass.
How will funds be allocated?
United Way and The New York Community Trust are meeting with city, state, and federal agencies and representatives from relief organizations and other nonprofit service providers. We are assessing individual and community needs and identifying where government money will be contributed. We are determining the gaps and will provide emergency assistance for victims and their families, grants that meet the needs of others affected by the disaster, and support to rebuild communities.
Broad categories of need that we have identified to date, include:
* Increase the ability of disaster-assistance agencies to respond to emergency needs.
* Sustain the psychological well-being individuals and families in New York and other affected communities.
* Support the social-economic recovery of individuals, families, and communities.
* Support the economic rebuilding of lower Manhattan.
* Ensure the capacity of nonprofits to continue to provide services.
* Monitor and mitigate the environmental impacts of the disaster.
* Promote respect and tolerance within New York and other affected communities.
Final goals for the Fund will be decided upon by the governing bodies that is being developed in consultation with other funders and experts.
Who will determine the policies, procedures, and operating standards of The Fund?
A governance structure is being developed that will include business and community leaders. We are committed to the highest level of accountability and impact.
Is the Fund exclusively for New York or really a national fund that will help other individuals and communities?
The September 11th Fund is a national fund. While a significant portion of the funds will be used in the New York City/Tri-State area, we know that individuals and families from other communities have been affected. The Fund will provide support to help meet their needs and to those of their communities.
Can donors restrict their gift?
Given the enormity and breadth of the needs, we encourage donors to give to the general Fund, so that dollars can be directed to where they are needed most. What is The New York Community Trust? The New York Community Trust was established in 1924 to improve the quality of life in New York City and help people with their philanthropy. An aggregate of 1,500 charitable funds set up by individuals, families and business, The Trust last year distributed over $145 million in grants throughout the New York region and all over the country for issues related to children and families, health, community development, education, and many other worthwhile causes. Their Web site address is www.nycommunitytrust.org. What is United Way of New York City?
