Guam Flips From Democrat to Republican, Pro-Life Candidate Wins Governor’s Race

Republicans flipped the governorship of Guam on Tuesday as Vicente “Tony” Ada, a legislator with a record of supporting pro-life laws on abortion, defeated pro-abortion Democrat Sen. Therese Terlaje.

In unofficial final results released early Wednesday by the Guam Election Commission, Ada is the winner of the close race.

Ada and running mate E.J. Calvo received 15,945 votes (51.45 percent). Terlaje and Sabina Perez received 14,925 votes (48.15 percent).

The Republican ticket’s lead of roughly 1,020 votes ended eight years of Democratic control of Adelup under term-limited Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero. Sen. Therese Terlaje called Ada to concede on behalf of her ticket after the 1:30 a.m. tally, according to the Pacific Daily News.

Results remain unofficial pending certification.

Ada co-sponsored and voted for the Guam Heartbeat Act (Bill 291-36) in the 36th Guam Legislature to protect babies from abortion.

The measure would have banned abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected — typically around six weeks of pregnancy. It passed the Legislature before being vetoed by the Democratic governor and could become law thanks to this election.

Ada has described himself as pro-life in campaign forums.

Terlaje, who served as speaker of the Guam Legislature, voted against the Heartbeat Act. At a Guam Women’s Chamber of Commerce forum, she stated: “If anybody thinks I’m running for governor because I want to wage a war between women on pro-life or pro-choice, that is not my intention at all.”

In a prior Esperansa Project survey response, she indicated support for legal abortion.

Pro-life advocates on Guam have long sought tighter limits on the procedure. The Heartbeat Act represented the most significant recent legislative effort to protect unborn children once a heartbeat is detectable. Ada’s victory places a co-sponsor of that measure in the governor’s office for the first time.

Republicans also appeared positioned for a narrow majority in the incoming 39th Guam Legislature based on the same unofficial counts. Voter turnout was approximately 53 percent. Ada is expected to take office in January 2027.

Guam? Maybe we should move to Guam, because the communists have taken over the entire west coast and are about to take over practically the entire east coast.

I liked it when I was stationed there. It's small but it's a beautiful place, especially if you like snorkeling and fishing and the towns are pretty well developed.

I suspect the vote went the way it did because of the pro-life issues and the population is heavily Catholic.

"Guam? Maybe we should move to Guam,..."

I suspect many are having that thought tonight.

I love Guam. It's expensive though, and full of Chinese tourists.

Beautiful beaches!

Not too many, though. It may "tip over."
