Nuking the filibuster would come back to haunt Republicans
New York Post ^ | November 7, 2025 | David Harsanyi

Nuking the filibuster is unprincipled, but it also makes little political sense: Trump would be doing Democrats a huge favor by greasing the wheels for exploiting fleeting one-party national majorities in the future, which will allow them to shove through massive generational “reforms” without any national consensus.

And they would be able to do it without taking any political heat for nuking the filibuster.

In recent years, they’ve coalesced around an argument that says the 60-vote threshold to cut off debate in the Senate is antiquated — a “Jim Crow relic,” said one-time filibuster champion former President Barack Obama — and fundamentally “undemocratic.”

Democrats contend that the filibuster facilitates “minority rule,” by which they mean “federalism.”

Yes, filibusters protect the minority because crass majoritarianism is objectively un-American, as is centralized one-party “democratic” rule from Washington.

The filibuster isn’t in the Constitution, but in many ways it is one of the last tools left in DC that can limit the power of the federal government and compel separation of powers.

Even as a political consideration, ending the filibuster is counterproductive.

What they would do to this country, purely out of spite and political bloodlust, if they were to become the majority party again.

It’s unimaginable.

I have a question. If true why haven’t the democrats done this when they were in power? Like during the Obama administration.

During the Biden Administration, they came very close. Two Democratic Senators, Manchin of West Virginia and Sinema of Arizona refused to go along, and stopped it.

Both have been driven from the Democratic Party.

It’s been said before, we cannot continue down this path. The sides are too divergent on everything now. There are plenty of places for these people to go to enjoy their communism. Let America stand for freedom again. Sink or swim, pass or fail but let our grand experiment continue.

They should have done it. Like Trump said, the Dems will do it anyway, and then make up some lame excuse which the legacy media will run with 24/7. In the mean time, the shutdown is blamed on Trump, it probably influenced some of the recent elections and edges the Dems closer to the simple majority they need to take over. If they give up anything to the Dems to get this shutdown over with, it will be the go-to tool for them and they will use it every chance they get. The filibuster was a gentleman’s agreement. There are no gentlemen or women in Congress anymore. It is life and death combat. Nuke the filibuster, end the shutdown, and make it as clear as possible that the faucet is on because Republicans made it happen.

With the dims power is a one way street. When they are out of power the filibuster is used. When in power it becomes an “undemocratic” tool and should be abolished. Whatever serves their purposes they will argue.

YES IT IS. It’s the best reason. End the filibuster and pass no court stacking, no DC Statehood ... FOR ONCE, let the GOP be strategic.

The problem is that bills aren’t ready to put majority rule to useful work.

If it was nuked, the democrats would scream.

How about sending a proposed constitutional amendment to the states?

Oh, we were just making noise to get votes.

“The Congress shall have power to dispose of...the territory ...of the United States...”

ARTICLE IV. SECTION 3

Red states can cede some of their rural areas for federal open carry ‘bases of freedom’ which can then be made into independent countries.

You live most of your lives within a few square miles.

Each country’s treaty of friendship with the USA would bar foreign forces from the country and provide for transit rights throughout the US.

The constitution of each country would forever bar income, property and wealth taxation.

What about the $40 trillion in US debt? Not a problem for the new countries.

“Democrats contend that the filibuster facilitates “minority rule,” by which they mean “federalism.”

That’s why they eliminated for executive nominations in 2013 to help the Republican minority oppose Obama’s nominees.

I tend to like it because it has prevented Democrats from doing some awful things. But the Dems are going to get rid of it as soon as they can anyway. And in a gunfight, it is better to shoot first than second.

They should get rid of it.

“They might. “

They will.

“That’s not a good reason to do it for them.”

We would not be doing it for them. We would be doing it for us.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane.

The Dems made the unprecedented move of filibustering W’s judicial nominees. The GOP finally grew a pair and was going to use the nuclear option. Last minute, McCain and his “gang of five” made a deal whereby W got a couple of nominees and the Dems got the filibuster.

When asked why, McCain said, cause we wouldn’t want the Dems to do that to us if we were in the minority.

Flash forward to Obama with the Republicans in the minority. The Dems exercised the nuclear option first chance they got.

McCain, for some reason, had no comment.

I wish they'd stop wasting time on talking about this nonsense. At least half of the Republicans in the Senate are Democrats (they are just Republicans in name only) and won't do anything to change the Big State status quo. They don't even care if the Democrats revoke the 'filibuster' made up rule when they take power. Heck, the so-called Republicans would probably support them.
Sure, if a vote came on this proposal I'm sure a bunch of "Republicans" would vote for it - just enough to barely lose. It sucks, but we need to understand that most of the so-called Republicans in Congress are just Democrats who pretended to be something else to win their elections.

I say who cares. Elections have consequences. The country is already a shell of itself. The real problem is that even relying only on 50 votes the Republicans still couldn’t get most things done but the Democrats would get everything done. The Senate has been useless since it has had direct elections.

The Democrats will only nuke it with all 3 branches of government. The backstop is the country not hiring Mamdani types country wide. If they want the Presidency(as of 2025) they’ll have to nominate someone who isn’t a total loon. Once the Mamdani types start winning national elections it’s easy to argue the country no longer exists as a free republic.

If they nuke the filibuster it will remove the wall that the GOP has been hiding behind for decades. Instead of having a big CYA, they would have to do something. Whether they have the balls to do what is right for the country remains to be seen, but I’d rather them than the Dems.

Good point. When did politicians have principles? Most often the lack of principles is the sign of a successful campaign.

As if that’s not the first thing the Democrats would do if they ever again have a majority.

Make it a real filibuster…have the SOBs be forced to go to the podium and blather for hours. Then the whole country will see what assclowns they are.

Texas can split into 4 states if it wants to. Also the State of Long Island would be nice.
