Ringside: What’s Behind Newsom’s ‘Special Session’ on Gasoline Prices
california globe ^ | 09/25/24 | Edward Ring

None of this, however, is stopping Governor Gavin Newsom, who has dragged a handful of legislators back to the Capitol for a special session on alleged price gouging by California’s oil refineries. In a press release on September 3, the governor claimed that “Gas price spikes on consumers are profit spikes for oil companies, and they’re overwhelmingly caused by refiners not backfilling supplies when they go down for maintenance.”

To prevent these alleged misdeeds, the governor proposes to require California’s refineries to stockpile reserves of gasoline to meet demand whenever refineries are not operating. In addition to mandatory storage, the law would require refineries to report how much refined gasoline they have stored at all times.

1. Chevron, Phillips 76 and Exxon/Mobile all have refineries in SoCal, and if they were thinking long term they would immediately SHUT DOWN those refineries and Move out of State.

2. All Public Employee's in the State should be Required to exclusively use an EV or Mass Public Transportatio for ALL Travel at ALL times. This will save the limited supply of Gasoline for the Citizens

This is an obvious attempt to appear to be “doing something.” It’s also a sign that the issue is an important one, even to them.

The only one ‘guaging’ as Harris puts it, is the State of California. If they took off their rediculous environmental restrictions, then they could drop $3 off of the price. Why is California’s gasoline $3 or more per gallon of gas more than the rest of the states? Look at California regulations.

Uhh...Gavin...you have the highest state taxes on distillate fuels of any state in the union. Instead of going after companies that actually produce fuels, why not just cut back on your state spending and reduce the taxes on fuels?

Why is it that you Democrats always hurt producers with you policies rather than looking for ways to cut spending to help the people of CA. It’s because you want to give take the money from productive citizens and give it away to buy votes for the next election.

I don’t know if it’s still true, but CA lets each county set its own fuel regulations in terms of “blends”. It used to be that CA has 32 blends for 3 types of fuels (regular, mid-grade, and premium). This prevents the producers from achieving economies of scale and lower prices that would otherwise be possible.

In the last month NorCal gas has gone from high $4.80 to higher $5.60 with high octane at $5.99. Newsom will do what?

Gas companies make 4 cents per gallon and the state makes $1.50/gal, which one is gouging?

What's Behind Newsom’s ‘Special Session’ on Gasoline Prices,

Well, how about demonizing oil producers as price gouging profiteers sucking the life blood out of the people while at the same time promoting even more insane new California energy policies that will drive the prices higher than the old California insane energy polices already have.

Yeah, as if Newsom is some kind of expert on the economy - not understanding that mandating oil companies to stockpile gas will raise the price to the consumer and/or cause the companies to flee California, as Chevron has moved its headquarters - and 2,000 jobs - to Texas.

“Contributing to the company’s move is likely California’s lawsuit filed last year against five big oil companies, including Chevron over climate change.”

And don’t think they won’t close their refineries:

“According to recent reports, Chevron has warned that it may close both refineries it operates in California, including the Richmond Refinery...The refinery is a major employer and economic driver in the region. If closed, it could lead to job losses and economic disruption.”

Too expensive for just about anyone to build now. Instead of subsidizing wind and solar, maybe it would be better to subsidize new modern refineries designed for American sourced petroleum.

Filled up yesterday in So Cal and gas is definitely up - again.

“As of September 12, 2024, the highest average gas price in the US is in California, with a price of $4.76 per gallon (Source: “US Gas Prices: See Where Your State Stacks Up”, published on September 18, 2024).

In January 2024, the average price per gallon of regular gasoline in California was $4.56 - it’s essential to note that California has consistently had the highest average gas prices in the US throughout 2024.”

Guess I got off easy at $4.69 - I use Ralphs gas points so that gave me $1.00/off per gallon. Still, just returned from Pennsylvania where I saw gas at $3.19/gallon.

Newsom doesn’t care, he is far above the hoi polloi while being driven around in a limo, flying around for Dem fundraisers and eating at $200/plate restaurants like French Laundry while mandating COVID restaurant closures. Hell, he told us to mask up when eating with our families and to put our masks on between bites.

He won his recall in a landslide and knows he is untouchable in this state.

Gas prices in CA have been rising for a month now. They are now between $.50 - $.70 more expensive than last month.

Now the dirty little secret is that CA requires special winter and summer gasoline blends. It takes about 30 days to make the changes. half of the refineries shut down, make changes then the other half shuts down.

If and Liberal in CA had a brain they abandon the special blends and follow the rest of the nation.

It is expensive in California because of TAXES, REGULATIONS AND GREATER COSTS OF DOING BUSINESS IN CALIFORNIA. All the above are in control of Governor Newsom aka “Governor Good Hair.”
