Kamala Harris to propose federal ban on ‘corporate price-gouging’ in food and groceries

* Vice President Kamala Harris will propose the first-ever federal ban on “corporate price-gouging” in the food industry, her campaign announced.

* Harris will also pledge that if elected, she will direct the Justice Department to increase scrutiny of potential mergers between grocers and food producers.

* The ban is part of a broader effort by the Democratic presidential nominee to respond to voters’ ongoing frustration with the high cost of meat and groceries.

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris plans to propose the first-ever federal ban on “corporate price-gouging in the food and grocery industries,” her campaign announced late Wednesday.

“There’s a big difference between fair pricing in competitive markets, and excessive prices unrelated to the costs of doing business,” the Harris campaign said in a statement. “Americans can see that difference in their grocery bills.”

The proposed ban is part of a broader economic policy platform that the Democratic presidential nominee plans to unveil Friday at a campaign rally in battleground North Carolina.

Harris will also pledge that if elected president, she will direct her administration to increase scrutiny of potential mergers between large supermarkets and food producers, “specifically for the risk that the proposed merger would raise grocery prices for consumers,” her campaign said.

This package of regulatory proposals is one of the Harris campaign’s earliest efforts to outline an economic platform that is independent of President Joe Biden’s agenda.

Before Biden abruptly dropped out of the race in July and endorsed Harris, he had spent more than a year campaigning for reelection and blaming corporate greed for consumer prices driven higher by inflation.

Harris’ plan still sits firmly within the overall Biden approach to regulation, however, which has prioritized consumer protections across a range of industries and sued to block several massive corporate mergers.

Fed cutting rates before September like ‘yelling fire in a crowded theater’

https://san.com/cc/fed-cutting-rates-before-september-like-yelling-fire-in-a-crowded-theater/

There’s a company called MacroEdge and they do a very transparent job of tracking job cut announcements. We’ve had an average of 100,000, more than 100,000 job cuts announced over the last four or five months here in a time of the year that is typically benign. Usually you see your worst month of the year be January, that’s when the CEO and the CFO come in and clean house. But April was worse and it’s been just awful ever since then. For heaven’s sake, we’re seven days into the month of August and we’ve already seen 40,000 job cuts announced.

Sheriffs slam Biden-Harris admin over failed border policies that let in Tren de Aragua after group gave ‘green light’ to shoot cops

https://nypost.com/2024/08/13/us-news/sheriffs-slam-biden-harris-admin-over-border-policies-that-let-in-tren-de-aragua/

Sheriffs across the US are slamming the Biden-Harris administration over the failed border policies that allowed in violent Tren de Aragua gang members, who are now threatening to shoot cops. The Venezuelan prison gang has sent its members across the southern border posing as migrants seeking asylum in the US. While in the country, the gang’s leadership has given its members the “green light” to shoot American law enforcement officers who try to disrupt their operations.

In a statement Tuesday, leaders of the American Sheriffs Alliance called for national attention to Tren de Aragua’s threat and said the source of the gang’s actions is the open US-Mexico border. “When we allow a brutal and violent gang, like [Tren de Aragua], to operate in the United States, we have failed in terms of border security,” said Canyon County, Idaho, Sheriff Kieran Donahue.

Surging Steel Imports Put Up To Half a Million U.S. Jobs at Risk

https://www.epi.org/publication/surging-steel-imports/

The U.S. steel industry is facing its worst import crisis in more than a decade. In the aftermath of the Great Recession, steelmakers in other countries, backed by aggressive government support, continued to add production capacity as demand stagnated. The open and large U.S. market became the prime target for the massive excess supply stemming from this excess capacity, and, since 2011, U.S. steel imports have surged and import unit values have plummeted.

Kamala Harris’ campaign team is editing news headlines on ads in her favor — without outlets’ knowledge: report

https://nypost.com/2024/08/13/us-news/harris-campaign-editing-news-headlines-in-her-favor-without-outlets-knowledge-report/

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign team has been quietly editing news headlines in Google search ads to make it seem like major news outlets are on her side, according to a report.

The altered headlines — appearing on Google ads and paired with a “Paid for by Harris for President” banner — were changed without the news outlets’ knowledge, Axios reported Tuesday.

Nearly a dozen publishers were swept up in the faux headline campaign, including major companies like the Guardian, Reuters, CBS News, the Associated Press and PBS.

“Inflation, as Milton Friedman has stated, is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.”

The monetary inflation is reflected in huge housing and stock prices.

The food inflation was caused by Joe Biden causing oil prices to soar after he shut the Keystone Pipeline project down. Petroleum and natural gas are used for fertilizer, tractor fuel, truck fuel, food processing fuel, and grocery store electricity production.

There is also the food related impact of the Russian/Ukrainian war.

<amala and democrats work with the idea that, in order to solve a crisis, you either have to imagine a crisis or create one.

Climate change is an imagined crisis, so, governments and industries are having to spend trillions in fixing a problem that doesn’t exist, while creating massive new problems which do end up being crises.

Covid was deemed a crisis, and governments everywhere thought they knew how to deal with it with government control of just about every event in people’s lives, while they also created massive new and expensive new problems.

Now, it’s the imagined price-gouging crisis, which will lead to government control of industries and businesses, leading to massive new and expensive problems for the economy and for people’s livelihoods.

The real crises everywhere it government intrusion into people’s lives and into industries and businesses. No government based on left-wing fixes, can ever solve any crisis, and what they do end up doing is creating a lot more crises and a lot more burdens for people and businesses.

Nixon tried the wage and price control thing. Products that were not profitable at the control price disappeared from the shelves. A person could not get a raise so stock options, reduced work for same pay check and other diversions came into play. It sucked.

IF the American people are too stupid to vote overwhelmingly for a President who actually understands how business works then these entire United States of America will be in for a very nasty surprise within a year. remember friends...”elections have consequences then everyone suffers the consequences”. truer now than it has been in the entire history of this country. enjoy your harris salad and bon appetit`.

From my profile page suggesting state and federal office campaign platforms:

BEEF

The beef processing industry would be made more competitive to benefit consumers and ranchers.

That proposal is several months old. I would basically break up the beef processing industry. Each new company would own one large or several smaller plants of comparable capacity. I do not envision price controls, only vigorous competition.

“her economic plan is to spend trillions more on child care”

I have proposed this on this site and elsewhere:

Seven days a week jobs and childcare can be shared.

Week 1

Mom 1
4 days job
3 days childcare

Mom 2
4 days child care
3 days job

Week 2

Mom 2
4 days job
3 days childcare

Mom 1
4 days child care
3 days job

If the workday is 10 hours long, each mom will average 35 hours a week working on average.

NOTE: It would be an entirely a private initiative, so it does not appear on my profile page as a campaign platform issue.

In the modern era, many companies like grocery stores, Walmart and Amazon operate seven days a week.

Nice deflection by kneepads Harris. The US government has destroyed the dollar. The food isn’t more expensive, the Dollar is worth less so it takes more of them to buy the same things.

“Price controls wherever they have been tried in history...”

Do keep up.

Nowadays price controls are typically only partially imposed, say on 30% to 50% of the housing units for the likely loyal to leftist politician voters. The remaining units are not price controlled. England has its Section 106 agreements, but “affordable” unit set asides are common in famous US ‘blue’ cities.

Imaging a new building where the cost of the units would require rents of at least $1600/month. If 40% of the units are rent capped at say $1000/month, the remaining units would have to be marketed at $2000/month or more.

However, such price differentiation is tougher to do in the supermarket environment since SNAP benefits often enable the lower declared income leftist voting block folks to buy just about any human consumable product sold by the store.

Progressives are Communists in a hurry. And, wow, does Karmello have ants in her pants!

Comrade Bernie was/is all-in on converting the Donkeys to the National Democratic Socialist Workers Party, and Karmello is fully aligned.

Karmello is goose-stepping rapidly toward this Democratic-Socialist reconstruction along with Soetoro's initiative to "fundamentally change America".

This will be a 4th term of Soetoro unless we win.
