Shared historical interests in preventing Arab Nationalist/Socialists backed by the Soviets controlling the Middle East. Ongoing interests in preventing a Sunni Islamist Caliphate. The Islamic Republic of Iran's inherent war with the US and Israel and our shared interest in preventing them from getting nukes.
