The local cop who interrupted Thomas Crooks’ assassination attempt on Donald Trump — but failed to stop the deranged gunman from squeezing the trigger — saved the ex-president’s life, a Pennsylvania sheriff insisted Tuesday.
Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe doubled down on his defense of the Butler Township police officer who confronted Crooks at the Saturday rally and assailed online critics as “a–holes” in an interview with The Post.
Slupe argued that the officer — whose department was enlisted by the Secret Service to help during the rally — merely coming face to face with the shooter delayed what could have been a worse outcome for Trump.

I find it hard to believe that the State Police were not there, just the local cops from a 13,000 town.
And they had 23 on the force, I can't imagine they are that well trained in this area.
I don’t know if the state police were there. This was a SS mission, it falls to them to prepare the local/state police on procedures.

Why didn’t the cop go back inside the building, and shoot up through the roof? Would have certainly thrown the kid off his mission, and attracted counter-sniper attention. Just patch the holes after you’re done.
I’ve been asking that very question. How did an untrained amateur, apparently not practiced or trained with that rifle and ammo, think he could make that shot? Especially having to turn his attention to the cop than turn and re-acquire the target, calm down, control breathing and squeeze off a shot?
Was he a patsy fall guy providing cover for a second sniper?
From what I understand, this officer was “boosted” to the roof by another officer, and pulled himself up like a “chin-up” to see over the top of the roof. At this point, Crooks pointed his rifle at the cop, the cop let go of his grip and fell 8 feet to the ground. In other, words, this police officer didn’t have the ability or opportunity to shoot the would-be assassin.

The ladder seemed to be on the outside of the "perimeter", fenced off from the event side. The cop may have come from the event side?

I can believe that. It’s not the locals job to provide security for a federal president. This is strictly an SS operation. If they want the locals to help, it’s their decision to make. The SS comes in and takes over. This is all on the SS DEI chick.
I think the locals saw what was happening and said, hey we got to do something but were not properly equipped or trained.
Perhaps because they had a report of someone with a gun on the roof and thought they should see if that report was true.
You know, investigate.
