He was facing to the right, I think that saved his life. If he had been facing forward that same bullet would have gone in his ear.

Then it likely was "centimeters" either, unless it was more than 4/5's of an inch and less than one inch away.
How about using "fractions of an inch", or "hair's breadth"?
