DiogenesLamp: "Dirty tricks at the Wigwam: Chicago's first convention"
Seward was scaaaaary after his "irrepressible conflict" speech.
Here he tries to serve up some "mild beer"! 😄
Your alleged "dirty tricks" sound pretty mild to me, more or less politics as usual.
The facts that matter include:
- NY Sen. Seward was the favored candidate, however favored by only about 1/3 of the total.
Seward was also hated and feared by many, for the same reasons DiogenesLamp hates and fears "northeasterners" -- Seward was "scaaaaary", a radical abolitionist, immigration supporter, and did not have strong support from NY Tribune editor Horace Greeley.
Greeley expected Seward to win but supported Edward Bates of Missouri. - After the November election, Pres. Lincoln appointed all of his main rivals to important positions -- Seward, Bates, Chase, Cameron & Dayton -- a practice we see even today, and is not considered either "corrupt" or "bribery".
Inside the Wigwam -- May 18, 1860 Republican Convention.
The Wigwam held up to 10,000 people.
Lincoln himself did not attend the convention.
