First of all, contrary to your claims here regarding the 1860 Republican Convention in Chicago, Lincoln did not attend and specifically instructed his supporters not to offer anything in exchange for support from other delegates.

Ref: a famous Republican open convention:

DiogenesLamp: "Dirty tricks at the Wigwam: Chicago's first convention"

Seward was scaaaaary after his "irrepressible conflict" speech.
Here he tries to serve up some "mild beer"! 😄

Your alleged "dirty tricks" sound pretty mild to me, more or less politics as usual.
The facts that matter include:

  1. NY Sen. Seward was the favored candidate, however favored by only about 1/3 of the total.
Seward was also hated and feared by many, for the same reasons DiogenesLamp hates and fears "northeasterners" -- Seward was "scaaaaary", a radical abolitionist, immigration supporter, and did not have strong support from NY Tribune editor Horace Greeley.
Greeley expected Seward to win but supported Edward Bates of Missouri.

  2. After the November election, Pres. Lincoln appointed all of his main rivals to important positions -- Seward, Bates, Chase, Cameron & Dayton -- a practice we see even today, and is not considered either "corrupt" or "bribery".
Inside the Wigwam -- May 18, 1860 Republican Convention.
The Wigwam held up to 10,000 people.
Lincoln himself did not attend the convention.
