I’m not sure this case was right -vs- left. It’s more a “dot the ‘i’s and cross the ‘t’s kind of argument”. The govt sent court summons’ with a date and place TBD, then an updated letter with the actual place and time. The aliens were claiming that the summons should have had the date on it and was thus invalid.
Perhaps, Gorsuch was just being overly pedantic here.
No. Gorsuch is solidly conservative constitutionalist. On textualism issues, he’s like Scalia (hardly a leftist) on the text & meaning of Congressional law. This wasn’t a solid left/right issue. I get it- we want a specific outcome no matter how we get there. If you do that often enough, though, you establish precedent & it turns around & bites us 😉
