The oceans are under-saturated with respect to carbon dioxide. They absorb it and critters grow their shells faster. They die and fall to the bottom. And viola, limestone is ultimately formed and carbon dioxide is taken from the atmosphere.
And the shell critters are so good at it that they came close to end all life on earth until human heroes figured out how to put some back in the atmosphere.
