That’s what I don’t understand. I’m assuming that same ship passed over the same spot countless times before, along with every other lake freighter. Maybe a submerged steel container? They are serious navigation hazards on the ocean.

We still mine taconite in the USA?
That’s big news. Somebody tell FJB to shut down that mine pronto.

A lot of them are from around the early 50s
Until 2022, the last freighter built for the lakes was constructed almost 40 years ago.
The ww2 boats/freighters still working are mostly pushers now.

This one was easy:
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, was carrying about 26,116 long tons of taconite pellets.[4]

That wasn’t an underwater hit; too high on the portside hull.

Taconite (iron ore) salvage can be lucrative.Unless you have 26,000 tons more than empty.

So the hole is above the Waterline ?
If so then why is it taking on water ?

You’d think a heavily traveled shipping lane would have excellent charts and maps of underwater shoals, reefs, stone outcroppings, etc.
BTW, the Edmund Fitzgerald was so long, if it could be stood upright on its end intact, where it lies in Lake Superior, nearly half would be sticking up out of the water. Still way to deep at the bottom there for conventional SCUBA diver systems; they needed deep diving suits and submersibles to explore it and retrieve its bell for the ceremony and museum.
