Given the political blowback, Merchan needs an out. That might very well be the case. I'm not saying it is, but it's definitely a possibility. Things didn't turn out the way they thought they would.

A mistrial would get the Dems out of this mess. It would also mean they could bring Trump to trial again later if the election starts to look tight.
