If voters had their way, Donald Trump would pick one of his former 2024 primary rivals to be his running mate.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) are the top two choices among people who gave their preference for whom the 77-year-old Trump should pick to join the GOP ticket this year, according to a new Harvard CAPS/Harris poll out Monday.
DeSantis, who ruled himself out of being Trump’s No. 2 in February, was the pick of 12% of all voters surveyed and 23% of self-described Republicans.
The 45-year-old Sunshine Stater was followed in the preference list by Scott (9% of all voters, 12% of Republicans), biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy (8%, 13%) and former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (5%, 8%).
Nearly four in 10 respondents wanted Trump to pick “someone else” (11%) or “none of the above” (28%) on the Harvard/Harris list, which also included Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (3%), Sen. JD Vance of Ohio (3%), Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida (3%), North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (3%), Arizona GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake (2%) and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik of New York (2%).
Trump has teased that he will announce his VP decision shortly before the Republican National Convention, scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee.

NBC is a legal issue. Vivek Ramaswamy was born on August 8, 1985 in Cincinnati, Ohio to parents who were in the U.S. legally but not U.S. citizens. The U.S. Supreme Court (SC) has ruled that someone who is born on U.S. soil is an NBC if at the time of his birth, his parents were in the U.S. legally but not U.S. citizens. Therefore, according to the mandatory legal authority of sound constitutionally-based SC ruling and precedent, Vivek is an NBC.
Detailed argument
Since around 1900, (SC) rulings have become less and less valid because SC has gradually moved away from basing their decisions on the Constitution as written and originally understood and intended. But their ruling on NBC appear to be based on sound application of the Constitution.
In Perkins v. Elg, 99 F. 2d 408, Court of Appeals, Dist. of Columbia Circuit 1938, the Court of Appeals noted as part of the basis for their decision that...
United States v. Wong Kim Ark, 169 U.S. 649, 18 S. Ct. 456, 42 L. Ed. 890, 1898 [found that] [W]hen the Constitution was adopted the people of the United States were the citizens of the several States for whom and for whose posterity the government was established. Each of them was a citizen of the United States at the adoption of the Constitution, and all free persons thereafter born within one of the several States became by birth citizens of the State and of the United States.
It appears the Supreme Court in Elg (1939) agrees with Ark (1898).
(Both Marie Elizabeth Elg and Wong Kim Ark were born on U.S. soil to parents who were here legally but not U.S. citizens.)
Again, the Constitution is properly applied as written and ORIGINALLY UNDERSTOOD and intended. What matters is what the ratifiers of the Constitution considered an NBC was. The Supreme Court decisions based on the good-faith and sound finding of original understanding of NBC in the Constitution is, therefore, legal precedent concerning NBC. Thus, Vivek should be considered an NBC.
Some argue that the term "NBC" is not specifically used in Ark or Elg, but these cases revolve around citizenship based on birth on U.S. soil, which is exactly what NBC is. An NBC is a citizen automatically because he was born on U.S. soil. He is “naturally” and automatically a citizen needing no further processing to become a U.S. citizen. He becomes a citizen under “natural” (birth) circumstances, exactly as Elg, Ark, and now Vivek.
Ask yourself, does Ramaswammy help or hurt. He hurts Trump.
Haley helps him more, but few of us want her.
Noeme, the puppy and goat killer, hurts Trump.
Seriously, who helps grow the base? Not my choice, but Gabbard does. Like Trump, she's a former Democrat, a veteran, woman of color, etc.
Who else? Sanders? Maybe and likely why there have suddenly been some negative news for the first time about her this past week. Someone is trying to knock her back.
No Senator. They don't have the experience as we can't afford losing Republican senators.
Maybe Abbott? But what does he add to the base? Nothing.
Sorry, Scott is just too obvious an attempt to pander to Black voters.
Affirmative action has made a cynic out of many. Trump is old and whoever he picks may end up running this country and the free world.
We know zilch about how he has ever dealt with a deadly serious crisis, a massive out of control economy, being disrespected patronized and rolled over by the Congress and the media. And world leaders like Russia, China, Venezuela,, muslim fanatics. Terrorists. Tens of millions of low iq low education migrants looking for benefits.
When has he shown the courage to be despised but still get the right things done.
I think Trump is in NJ now. And I believe he usually spends most of his time there in June thru August. And he could continue to live there to Jan 20, 2025.
I don't know what is constitutionally required to be a primary residence.
There are two interpretations. But regardless, I like many won’t vote for Ramaswammy. And more personally, I’ve suffered 20+ years of H1B so no Indian, none, period. Deport them all. I’d personally see every Indian deported at the head of the line over Mexicans.
If that’s the case I would hope that someone like that never becomes President. Leadership is supposed to be a sacrifice. If it’s all about “what do I gain” i would suggest that person is not the right person. In short, if DeSantis could help the country and his first thought is, what’s in it for me...please stay far from power Sir.
In ordinary times, the VEEP candidate had one job: pull voters from a base that were lukewarm on the Presidential candidate.
This year, the VP nom needs to do that, but also be assassination insurance.
Tim Scott virtually guarantees that Trump would get the JFK treatment.
Terrible choice.
Tim Scott is a fraud - a black version of Miss Lindsey Graham and on the Deep State team.
Assume Michelle Obama is running. So, we need Tim Scott. Period.
Gabbard’s not eligible, but if he did pick her or Tim Scott, I’d sit home on Election Day. I don’t want either of them one breath away from the Presidency. The former is a commie who endorsed and campaigned for Bernie Sanders. The later is a whimp.
Tim Scott is one of Mitch’s acolytes.
That’s why he backed Lisa Murkowski in Alaska over her conservative opposition.
DJT is not crazy enough to pick another Swamp creature like Mike Pence.
If we want a VP with absolute integrity there’s only one choice, Ben Carson.
Mike Flynn would cause a complete breakdown at Globalist Inc.
Therefore, he’s the perfect choice.
Well stated!
Is DeSantis even eligible? Both he and Trump are residents of Florida.
With that assumption, the election is over before the first vote is cast.
DeSantis is the only one who is a possible Trump 2.0, no other is even close
Yeah, he’s eligible but since Florida is solid red he wouldn’t be a smart choice.
Trump should pick someone who is hated enough by the establishment so as to discourage them from assassinating him. Someone who would also be a credible candidate in 2028 would also be good (but the party should not necessarily pick Trump's VP, assuming he gets re-elected--the candidates should prove themselves in the primaries).
Does anyone with a room temperature IQ think that Tim Scott is MAGA?
He wouldn’t even defend Trump when his house was raided.
