Much like trees, tech companies are filled with dead wood. Musk showed that by laying off 80% of twitter employees. I bet google could lay off a lot more people.
As a de facto appendage of government Google is now beginning to operate like a government bureaucracy. Google needs to be broken up into at least five companies with anti-trust laws.
If the boss is firing people, it’s because the boss sucks at his job either because he hired too many people in the first place or because he has mismanaged the product, and the demand has crashed.
Used to be called stock options.
Or because he just bought the company...................
The best job I ever had was working for a small, rich company who had a few hardware/network types on staff but was completely lost on software and systems integration. They gave me the whole job and left me alone for a decade - until Big Acquiring Company's internal auditors started demanding too much tribute. :)
There are a lot of bad workers out there.
But a lot of people seem reluctant to admit that there are a lot of bad managers out there too. Managers who cannot lead. Cannot manage. Cannot boost morale. Cannot set goals and help people achieve goals. Managers who are just bullies who manage through fear. Managers who focus all day on spreadsheets and putting little numbers in little boxes. Managers who only care about the “metrics” and don’t care about their staff at all.
And it’s terrible to shrug and say “The boss is always right”. Because a lot of bosses are driving their companies into the ground.
Platinum-level corporate double-speak.
They hire based on WOKE, not on merit?
Well, the folks who got their jobs based on merit will move on to saner companies. And the folks hired based on Kolor, Kink and Kin (NEPO babies) will fill the ranks with losers... and in time the company will fail.
Also depends on the boss. Internal promotions from inside the department don't always hire the best boss, but the best worker. Not the same thing, and good training on how to be a boss is hard to find. Like my high school baseball coach told the pitchers; "Throw strikes they can't hit. The rest of it is easy".
It’s a gentle FU
Younger workers demanding easy jobs and tons of benefits without performance. This entitled generation of lazy, stoopid kids will wreck this country just as fast if not faster than fedzilla.
God help us.
Whatever will they do when they are let go. They already know how to code.
Google is NOT a high tech company.
They are an advertising company.
And a world wide monopoly at that.
Learn to use AI to code. That’s the thing now.
Yes, I've had a lot of them before retiring a long time ago. Managers much younger who don't have a clue about what is being managed. Hired for quota purposes of being black and female, but clueless. Screaming about wanting me to fix a set of complicated interlinked servers within 15 minutes or be fired, and me explaining that it wasn't my responsibility but I'll do it and it will take 3 days and the need to bring in a couple IBM engineers to assist. Getting the director's approval, and us 3 engineers fixing the problem - in 3 days. Manager forced to leave within 2 months. And replaced with another idiot. This is a problem in many companies. I had one smart manager who got bumped to being a manager to get the pay he wanted, but refused to manage and still wanted to code. We worked on system machine code together, and he could translate the binary code in his head without having it displayed as hex instructions. Left within a couple months for higher pay at a startup. One capable manager out of dozens of bad ones. I retired early because there was no joy working for idiot managers.
They hire them because their bonus depends on meeting the quotas.
I guess I'm getting too old. Thought stock options were still stock options.
“Morale plummets at Google as workers complain bosses are ‘inept’ and ‘boring’”
so what else is new in the tech world? have these fools never read “Dilbert”?
