I was called down to San Diego from my home in Idaho to perform work. I had just received a nice 5% raise. Just as I arrived in San Diego to do the work, my company changed tax policy to collect income taxes based on the zip code where the work is performed. Now I would have to pay taxes based on state income tax for San Diego, CA vs Pocatello, ID. My entire raise and more was eclipsed from my paycheck. I saw exactly ONE paycheck with the increase.
Depending on the year this happened, you should be able to file a California Non-Resident tax return and get your money back. You shouldn’t have earned enough for the year to hit the income limits, even in crazy California.
