I understand that nothing Francis has done (particularly his demolition of the Pontifical Academy for Life, and restaffing it with pro-aborts) indicates that he is pro-life, save for anb occasional throwaway line seeming to be employed to get acceptance for something else at odds with Church teaching.
But since you used the general term Holy Father, it seemed that you were suggesting that American Catholic politicians of both parties were in lockstep with every statement, including those in which the Holy Father has NO authority. (For instance, it is outside the Holy Father’s competence to make authoritative statements on climatology in general, and the extent and effects of anthropigenic global warming in particular.
Basically, if an American liberal Catholic politician thinks he can use some said or done by the Holy Father to promote the agenda he already backs, he often does. The same Mario Cuomo who cried pluralism when acting for abortion “rights” also was all for restrictions on employment of capital punishment.
The Roman Catholic Church is in an extremely difficult period right now, and Francis has NOT been a friend of Church teaching. It will not always be this way, though.
