A large number of Israeli citizens are stocking up on firearms and ammunition in the aftermath of the Hamas Oct. 7 attacks, The New York Times reported on Friday.
Hamas killed over 1,200 civilians and kidnapped hundreds of others as part of a mass terrorist attack against Israel on Oct. 7. Hundreds of thousands of Israelis who previously did not own weapons are now buying up firearms to protect themselves against possible future attacks, according to the Times.
“God forbid, if something similar happens here, I want to know that I have a firearm,” Zvika Arran, an Israeli citizen living near the West Bank, told the Times. Arran said he was hesitant to purchase a firearm, but felt it was necessary.
Roughly 150,000 Israeli citizens owned gun licenses in 2021, but following Oct. 7, 256,000 new gun applications have been submitted for approval, according to the Times. Israel approved 13,000 gun licenses in 2022 and approved 23,000 as of Oct. 7.
The country approved 26,000 licenses in the past eight weeks along with 44,000 “conditional approval” licenses, according to the Times.
Officials in Israel’s current government have advocated for expanded gun ownership among the civilian population, according to the Times.
“Until Oct. 7, the private weapons policy in Israel was fairly well-balanced,” former Director-General of Israel’s National Security Ministry told the Times. “Then, the authentic fears of many Israelis changed in a single day.”
Citizens may qualify for gun ownership depending on age, location and military service or experience, according to the Times. New regulations were issued in January of this year that expanded the number of Israelis eligible for qualification.

It was shocking to see ZERO return fire from the citizenry of Israel during the October 7 attacks. I can’t think of even ONE incident. Now we know the reasons why; only a paltry number of Israeli Jews (and trustworthy gentiles) keep firearms in their homes.
The October 7 attack could have ended in complete fiasco (for Hamas) if gun ownership was common amongst Israeli Jews. Especially the ownership semi-auto magazine loaded rifles, i.e. “assault rifles.” Every Jew living within 20 miles of Gaza should have been armed, provided that they could pass a commonsense background check.
For most old-school American men as we find at FR, the idea of sitting with your family as you listen to the killers working door-to-door killing the neighborhood children and your neighbor’s wives and your friends in their homes, the concept of just waiting unarmed for them to enter your front door to execute your own family while you all just passively wait is unfathomable.
Israeli arms manufacturers like IWI have halted exports by reports I’ve heard.
Imported firearms for private use are very popular in Israel. Israel News Talk Radio’s Tamar Yonah brags about her new Springfield Armory Hellcat.
There were numerous defensive actions by Israelis on Oct. 7. Probably hundreds of Hamas invaders were killed then. Numbers overwhelmed Israelis because of the dereliction of Southern Command’s Yaron Finkelstein and IDF Intelligence chief Aharon Haliva.
Perhaps I misstated. I realize that on-duty security personnel and police returned fire and accounted for hundreds of terrorists. Security personnel at the Nova rave party, in particular, made heroic efforts. It was the lack of civilians, shooting back with personal firearms, that surprised me. Am I wrong?
I have no doubt that there was serious dereliction from IDF combatant command and intelligence.

Americans better start paying attention. This war has moved into America. So whose side are you on? The Israelis or the Muzzie Killer Terrorists? We know where the Poison Ivy Leaguers and their Caribbeaner Presidents stand.
Seems like the policy was a bit draconain. Oppressive. Authoritarian. And it created a very unsafe environment for the citizens subjects.
They actually had armed security. Private security, I believe, but I do not have a link for that fact.
They ran out of ammunition.
I believe that Israel has outlawed semi-automatic rifles from private ownership.
It is possible that music festival security was armed only with hand guns - against Hamas automatic rifles.
There never would have been an attack in the first place.
