Napoleon’s first wife, Josephine de Beauharnais, was born on Martinique. I don’t know if she had any African ancestry or suffered any transgenerational harm from it. I think she had a better life than most people at the time, even if Napoleon dumped her because she didn’t provide him with a son.

Their claim had already been rejected by two lower courts, mostly recently in January 2022, which judged that none of the plaintiffs could document instances of damage in their own lives that were directly and definitively linked to the abuses suffered by their enslaved ancestors.
