I went to my Army Officer Basic Course in 1991, right around the start of Brooks' meteoric rise in popularity.

My roommate was convinced Brooks had sold his soul to the devil as he had seemingly come out of obscurity and almost instantly became a household name.

I think my roommate might have been onto something.
