True story. Decades ago back in my high school days. School was an older brick building had a boiler for heat and hot water. Early in the morning janitor went to light the boiler and it blew up killing him and of course causing some damage to the building. The very tall smokestack for the boiler was visibly cracked and leaning a little. They called nearby Air Force base and said please no sonic booms today. But we went to school that day despite the damage and danger, THAT would not happen today.

If anything actually happened they would just report it and not say an explosion was heard...I’m guessing it’s nothing
Capitol Hill here. I was outside in front of my house. I registered two booms in quick succession, both loud with the first being louder. There could have been more but I obviously wasn’t paying attention at first. I wondered if a bomb had gone off somewhere. My second thought was a gas explosion. Fortunately my sophisticated detection system* didn’t register anything.
*I’m close enough to the Capitol than I’d hear instantaneous sirens, and a lot of them, if anything serious happened.
If you’re in DC area and you live to hear a boom, then it’s not nearly as bad as you thought it might be. It’s the boom you don’t live to hear that you need to worry about.

By the way, one of the UFO sighting mysteries is some of the alien vehicles make no sonic booms but obviously move over huge amounts of sky quickly. Evidence of possible interdimensional or time travel by them.
