For some reason American presidents have never gone to the coronation ceremonies. Maybe it has something to do with the nature of the revolution and the creation of the Republic.

For some reason American presidents have never gone to the coronation ceremonies...

The first President to actually leave the country was TR when he went to Panama to see how his canal was coming along. The next coronation was George V in 1911 when Taft was President. Don’t know who he sent, but it would have required him to be out of the country for a pretty long time. Next was George VI in 1937 during the Depression and run up to WWII. There was significant anti-English sentiment in the country at the time mainly from Irish Americans.

And then Elizabeth II in 1953. This one Eisenhower could practically have attended. But really, this is the first ‘precedent’ for a President not attending a coronation. I watched most of the ceremony. Can’t imagine the embarrassment to our nation with Joe sitting near the front either falling asleep or looking at his watch or having an ‘accident’.
