Poll pegs Ron DeSantis at 16% nationally in GOP Primary

Ron DeSantis’ poll numbers continue to collapse, with another survey showing a not-so-sweet 16.

A survey of 436 likely GOP Primary voters conducted April 24-27 by McLaughlin and Associates shows DeSantis mustering just 16% in a crowded field including Donald Trump and other declared and potential candidates.

The former President leads the field, with 52% support. DeSantis is firmly in second place, 10 points ahead of Mike Pence (6%), and 12 points ahead of Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy (each with 4%).

Undecided voters make up 7% of the sample, and no other name polled has more than 2% support.

Trump held a 23-point lead when this poll was taken a month ago, and the weeks since have only fortified the former President’s position.

DeSantis’ doldrums extend to the head-to-head sample, where Trump holds 67% support against 26% for DeSantis. To put this in perspective, Trump picks up 60% of the support from the other names when they are excised from the survey.

The McLaughlin poll is the second recent survey to show DeSantis at 16%.

Trump is gloating as DeSantis struggles, mocking the Governor as he seems to be lurching toward a launch in the coming weeks.

“He’s going to form an exploratory committee to determine — well, that’s a big step because he said he was never looking at committees. Now he’s looking at committees. It’s amazing what being 40 down does,” Trump said on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast Saturday. “The donors are largely leaving him now.”

Meanwhile, Trump is polling behind Biden in numerous swing states. And Trump keeps viciously attacking DeSantis — why doesn’t he spend that energy touting his own record or going after the current administration?

If Trump is the nominee, he’ll probably get my vote, but it will be without any enthusiasm.

Meaningless, but interesting. It doesn’t matter until he actually announces, then give it a week or two.

It’s a shame.

DeSantis deserrves better numbers, and should probably be higher, at perhaps 17%?

All kidding aside, I like DeSantis, but he should wait for the 2024 election cycle, when Trump isn’t running anymore.

Desantis is a non starter... (all others are a non starter with Trump in the race).

There is no math, anywhere, short of a major black swan event where Trump is not the Republican nominee and by a large margin.

I know Desantis is ambitious, but he’s setting himself up to learn the lessons Cruz and Rubio learned in 16. Risk to Desantis long term damage is far far greater than likelihood of him winning the nomination.

I want him to run in 2024 just to see him debate Trump. Reagan lost 1976 but came back strong 4 years later.

DeSantis made the same mistake that Trump made in 2016. He surrounded himself with many of the wrong folks.

He needs to wait for 2028, enthusiastically support Donald Trump, and ditch all of the RINO neo-cons who are backing him at present.

I meant to say that DeSantis should wait for the 2028 election cycle, not 2024. But, I see your point with DeSantis getting to debate Trump this election cycle. People would know him better by 2028.

Jeb2.0 a.k.a. desantis needs to declare he's running for president as a republican candidate now.

But, then again, not saying the obvious shows shows he's the type that likes to play games with people and jerk them around.

And no talk of exploritory committee or anything like that.

Any exploritory or other comment shows how wishy-washy and indecisive he would be as "an executive type".

Might as well destroy his future now, rather than have to put up with him trying to run for the senate or something in the future.

DeSantis can still be competitive at 16% at this point, especially since he has not formally announced. Others went through rough spells and went below 16% and wound up winning the nomination. Kerry comes to mind immediately. He pretty much backed into the nomination. Bill Clinton (’92) and George the Elder (’88) also come to mind. Heck, Biden himself got single digits in the New Hampshire primary (’20).

DeSantis should want a one-on-one early, which means knocking out Haley, pence, Ramaswamy etc. by South Carolina. His problem is that Trump is immune to anything but a possible health crisis or manufactured legal issue. He could say “Yeeeeargh!!” after the Iowa Caucus and laugh it off the next day, because unlike Dean, he can laugh at himself.

Right now, even with party poobahs working against Trump, the numbers aren’t there at the primary level for DeSantis.

Ramaswamy is playing a smarter game. He doesn’t attack Trump, but presents himself as MAGA 2.0. He is positioned well for big things in the future, and can simply use 2024 as a launching pad for such.

DeSantis has not figured out how to peel Trump’s voters away from him, and hiring veteran Cruz and John Ellis Bush operatives won’t help. Seriously, he’d be better getting some marketing whiz from Proctor and Gamble.

Meanwhile another poll shows 70% of voters don't want Trump or Biden to run.

I just hope Trump is convicted before the 2024 election so this insanity can end, otherwise it's 4 more years of Biden and doom for the entire planet.

I don't have much hope that logic will replace ignorance though, so enjoy being rounded up and stamped by the communists because you all were fooled again with this Trump crap.

Trump can’t beat Biden. Only desantis can, at this point. Trump animates the left and motivates the ballot harvesting schemes. We need MAGA without the Trump side effects.

Trump touts his own record and goes after the current administration all the time.

You should take notice of it.

Trump can’t beat Biden.

I believe both the Rassmussen and McLaughlin polls say otherwise.
