Fox Corp and Fox News on Tuesday settled a defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems for $787.5 million, averting a high-profile trial putting one of the world's top media companies in the crosshairs over its coverage of vote-rigging claims in the 2020 U.S. election.
The settlement was announced by Fox, Dominion and the judge in the case at the 11th hour, with a 12-person jury selected on Tuesday morning and the case poised to kick off with opening statements on Tuesday afternoon. Dominion had sought $1.6 billion in damages in the lawsuit filed in 2021, with Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis presiding over the case in Wilmington.
Dominion disclosed the settlement figure and its CEO John Poulos said Fox had admitted to telling lies about his company. Dominion attorney Justin Nelson said the settlement "represents vindication and accountability" and that "lies have consequences." Dominion lawyers declined to answer questions about whether Fox News would apologize publicly or make reforms.
"We acknowledge the court's rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false. This settlement reflects Fox's continued commitment to the highest journalistic standards. We are hopeful that our decision to resolve this dispute with Dominion amicably, instead of the acrimony of a divisive trial, allows the country to move forward from these issues," Fox said in a statement.
Shares of Fox Corp closed up slightly at $34 per share, but were down 1% in after-hours trading after the settlement amount was disclosed.
At issue in the lawsuit was whether Fox was liable for airing false claims that Denver-based Dominion's ballot-counting machines were used to manipulate the 2020 U.S. election in favor of Democrat Joe Biden over Republican then-President Donald Trump. Dominion had argued that these on-air claims caused the company "enormous and irreparable economic harm."

Money Laundering 101. That money will get into the pockets of politicians.
Fox had zero proof of any fraud, otherwise they would not have paid $787 million. Nobody pays that kind of money if they have alternatives.
Fox — and our press freedom — got ripped off.

And you’re absolutely sure, at the end of the day, they’ll be paying it? Lots of naivete on this thread. $787B is chicken feed to keep quiet the biggest scandal in US history.
Why won't Fox News use this State Department cable published by WikiLeaks to get their lawsuit dismissed?
This was the CIA's assessment of SMARTMATIC as far back as 2006. The cable makes all the same accusations that their guests did.

In a sense, this can mean that Dominion just got a powerful stake in Fox. https://t.co/o9HmIWLpb1β Michael Yon (@Michael_Yon) April 19, 2023
Mass mailing of ballots and ballot harvesting was always the bigger problem. But it isn’t going away and continuing to tell Republican voters to not vote by mail but wait for election day (when bad weather, voting machine breakdowns, etc., can happen) amounts to electoral suicide. It very clearly cost a number of close races in 2022.
No intelligent, serious and honest persons or political unions should ever trust their election vote counting to a computer with software and hardware created by private entities. Today there is no foolproof means of trusting the integrity of vote counting hardware and software unless the software is open source and the hardware can be isolated from any external network, wired or wireless. Ensuring the latter is practically impossible.
I see you have no knowledge of how labor Unions work.
Do these black boxes also control the audits and hand counts that take place in every voting jurisdiction?
Bad logic. You offer only one explanation, but there may very well be other reasons why they would do that.
Given that the trial was going to happen in Looney Toon Delaware that votes for Biden, They may have been terrified that the idiots on Delaware Juries would award a trillion dollars.
That trial should have never been allowed to be held in such a biased venue.
Do these black boxes also control the audits and hand counts that take place in every voting jurisdiction?
Show me the proof that these did indeed occur everywhere.
“That trial should have never been allowed to be held in such a biased venue.”
It’s the state that Fox is incorporated. Don’t be naive.
Fox admitted multiple times under oath that they had no evidence of Dominion fraud.
There is nothing to examine. Pull your head out from your nether region.
This is pure speculation. You have no source for that belief, just your own imagination.
Fox got its ass handed to it. Newsmax and OAN are next. It’s time to be realistic and go for stuff that makes sense rather than listening to morons like Mike Lindell.
I still don’t get this, the reporters were reporting on what Guiliani and the Kracken lawyer women were saying, basically reporting the news.
Fox was primarily being sued for statements made by its employees like Lou Dobbs and Maria Bartiromo.
The judge also ruled that allowing only one side of the story to make statements is not disinterested reporting. Fox refused to put Dominion staff on the air so they totally lost on the grounds you are asserting.
I watched a video of Dominion reps in Chicago, making the case of counting Whites as .75 ballots per vote. Dominion thought this a selling point.
I had to quit watching.
That's ALL the legacy media does.
Fox refused to put Dominion staff on the air so they totally lost on the grounds you are asserting.
This I was unaware of.
