NY Democrats propose 4% tax on Netflix, Uber to fund MTA

New Yorkers may soon be forced to pay more for their streaming subscriptions like Netflix and Hulu in a bid to stave off a major MTA fare hike.

Democratic members of the New York state Assembly on Thursday submitted a budget proposal that would impose a 4% sales tax on popular video and audio streaming services.

Other money-making schemes introduced in Albany include a fee on package deliveries and a surcharge on ride-hailing rides, the Wall Street Journal first reported.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it needs an influx of $1 billion to keep subways, buses and commuter trains running, without resorting to a planned 5.5% fare hike that would boost the price of a single ride from the current $2.75 to $3.

Did the nation vote for BiteMe?

If we were voting for this ****, Deep State wouldn’t have to steal elections.

They are trying to get all those who have an apartment. But whats really going to happen is that streamers are going to use out of state addresses. Then they are going to figure out where the IP is. And so they are going to start to use firewalls to hide IPs. And of course there are those who will simply move out of state. Most people have more than one streaming service. So those people may just limit the number of streaming services. And I wonder what they will do with Prime? They have free streaming with no delivery fee. Are they going to try and figure out how much is the streaming portion?

Chicago has a entertainment tax. They charge that on cable. So now nobody gets cable anymore. They just get internet.

Laz, Deep State certainly benefits from you thinking so.

But think about this, most if NYS’s counties are MAGA red.

And if NYC is so reliably loony lefty, why did Gotham have RCV shoved down its throat for mayorals?

New York City voters voted for Democrats. The majority of the rest of the counties in the State are RED. I live in the middle of the State. Why should I have to pay more for Netflix to fund a rail service I will never use in my life?

Internet is the new cable.

And to make up for lost tax revenue, it’s going to be taxed like it.

BTW, I heard the tax will also include downloads of ebooks and periodicals.

$0.25? That's a bargain compared to how much the rise in prices of practically everything has been with Bidenomics.

That’s sort of like a windfall tax.

Wow. Didn’t President Reagan say about libs that one of their beliefs is ‘if it moves, tax it’. NY needs to keep coming up with new revenue sources to make up for all the productive people leaving.

All those empty offices, not so many commuters coming into the city every day.

Politicians never even consider that cutting spending in some other area could fund this area. Clearly, if you're a Democrat, you can have their cake and eat it too!

Can’t figure out why people still live in NYC. They don’t realize that most of the country has very little crime. And women often walk alone. New Yorkers are like the frog in gradually heating water. They can’t see what they are putting up with. They think because its so expensive it is somehow better. It’s not. Its a horrible trash and crime filled city. New Yorkers can never retire without a pension, because they pay too much to live day to day. And can never save. If they have a pension they can move to Florida.

Consider how many Colleges NY has. That’s a lot of students from out of State. After four years, they move back to their home State. Why should these students do anything to help NY?
