Black History Month is a time to honor triumphs of African Americans throughout history, but students and parents at Nyack Middle School raised the alarm after a racially insensitive meal was offered on the first day of the month.
Honore Santiago's mother reassured her daughter, who is in the sixth grade, saying, "You should feel very happy that you spoke up."

From the beginning of the Trayvon Martin deal, the media has insisted on calling Trayvon’s Watermelon drink, an iced tea.
Heck, I’m as lily-white as it gets, and I want some!
And I won’t be offended.
I very much like all of the above.
Someone at Aramark thought it was a great idea!
Aramark food service is ruthlessly, monumentally incompetent. They gained the contract for food service in Michigan prisons and managed to lose it in record time.
CC
Teaching kids to have a chip on their shoulders. Never give them hazelnuts.
The right thing to do would have been to shut up, eat the danm food, and be grateful. Instead, it’s complain, eat the food, and hate Whitey.
They had better not ever serve me crackers. I’m white!
I think that is the problem. Someone CHANGED the day’s menu to this. Why? It was a stupid move.
Note to taxpayers in that neck of the woods: I’d keep my eyes on what happens next if I were you...
Just feed them a plate of crickets to save the environment.

It’s often served with Hoppin John. I don’t see why blacks are offended by traditional southern dishes. It’s a real stretch to associate chicken and waffles with slavery.
racially insensitive meal, only if it was served by a non African American. If tit were a black there would be no hooha. Shows you who is the racist
Is it an insult to the Indians to serve turkey on Thanksgiving?
How many schools contract out food service? I’ve never heard of such a thing. Schools hire kitchen staff who are they accountable for the menu the prep and the clean-up. Kids know the people handling the food.....etc.
Is this a city thing, you know where they spend an extraordinary amount of $$ on a per kid basis, yet test scores are always lower than suburban or rural schools??
Oh, I get it. This is part of the problem. There’s no ignorance to this. We either all get pissy about it, or we just shrug and not care. I choose the latter. This exercise is exhausting. We waste so much time on complete garbage.
The published menu was changed. School menus are specifically established, and don’t just get changed. Somebody was being all cutesy.
Thanks for the laugh.
