More Airports to Use Greener ‘Glide’ Approach to Landing -"(by having incoming planes turn off their engines"

Eleven more U.S. airports plan to adopt a new way of landing planes that reduces both emissions and noise — all by having incoming planes turn off their engines and glide down to the tarmac like a paraglider.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday that planes heading to Orlando, Fla.; Kansas City, Mo.; Omaha, Neb.; Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base; Reno, Nev.; and six airports in South Florida soon would make idle descents to runways. It's a method called “Optimized Profile Descent,” and more than 60 U.S. airports already have it in place.

Zero Hour was on TCM yesterday which the Airplane! used a lot of dialogue.

Pretty good movie.

Jet engines do not “throttle up quickly. There is considerable” lag” as the engine “spools” up.

One evening coming into O’Hare, just as he was about to flare for touchdown, the pilot advanced to full power and went around, due to a general aviation twin that blundered onto the runway.

Had he been at idle, things might have been different.

It’s all fun and green games until the bodies get stacked up.

Yes, it will be----for them. They will not be runway fodder, only you and I will. Can you imagine telling giant chin kerry that he is going to glide in for a landing.

The stupidity of turning off engines while landing is beyond anything I've seen before.

Crash avoidance, anyone?

What happens when the plane that's landing needs to throttle up quickly to avoid colliding with a plane that's on the wrong runway or on the wrong approach?

People will DIE. That's what happens.

These enviro-whacko's are just hell bent on getting everyone killed by every means possible. Eff them!!!

Better not need to go around for the second chance at approach

What an ignorant article. Having engines at at lower power setting is not the same as engines off!

Yep - there’s a reason pilots practice missed approaches - which require power to get around for another try...

RomanSolder — do NOT modify article titles, especially when you are adding factually incorrect information. The article is accurate and well written. Nowhere does it say the aircraft will turn off their engines. You have needlessly worked up a lot of people up with your comment. This makes FR look ridiculous.

I find the article to be well written and factual.

To all those complaining about Scientific American, note that this article was sourced from “E&E News” (Energy & Environment News) which is owned by Politico. Their FAQ says: “E&E News is a distinct brand and product owned by POLITICO LLC. E&E News is sold separately from other POLITICO products.”

The CEO of “E&E News” is Goli Sheikholeslami who was appointed CEO of Politico in January 2022.

January 10, 2022: Axel Springer today announced that Goli Sheikholeslami has been appointed as the new CEO of POLITICO Media Group. She will start in February. POLITICO Media Group is comprised of the media brands Axel Springer acquired in a 2021 eye-catching deal with Robert Allbritton, including POLITICO and Protocol. In addition, Sheikholeslami will become Chairperson of the Shareholder Advisory Board of POLITICO Europe, based in Brussels.

Sheikholeslami currently serves as President and CEO of New York Public Radio. She has vast experience in public and private media, including senior leadership roles at the Washington Post, Chicago Public Media, Conde Nast, and Time Warner. Sheikholeslami also served on the board at NPR from 2016 to 2019 and currently serves on the Board of Patreon, the membership platform for artists and creators.

Sheikholeslami grew up in suburban Washington, D.C., and received her undergraduate degree in international economics from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She also earned an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Sheikholeslami is the daughter of an Iranian diplomat and with her family fled shortly after the country’s 1979 revolution, arriving in the United States as political refugees.

Does an optimum descent profile explain explain the sick feeling in your gut when the pilot periodically descends?

Can be done but the opportunity to lose the aircraft and make wrong decisions and not practicing is always looming.

Here’s how it’s done and if you don’t read between the lines, possible:

Good factual article coordinated through AOPA.

They probably won’t go to idle until they reach minimums.I think someone at the FAA (non-pilot) doesn’t realize there is a time lag for jet engines to spool-up.

A missed approach or wind-shear at the end of the runway should keep the GO-team pretty busy. I guess that’s what happens when developers buy the area around airports and put up high-end homes.

Maybe they should follow the advice of a former Toledo, Ohio mayor and just move deaf people around the airport.

>Optimum Profile Descents have been around for decades. It is simply an arrival procedure from ALTITUDE that does not have multiple intermediate level off altitude<

Adding on....They are also known as Constant Rate Descents and have been in use in London for a decade.

The current ATC procedures and sequencing methods were developed in the 60s when many planes were not jets and many were not pressurized.

Todays avionics technology would make idle descent arrivals a breeze. The problem is the FAA and ATC are behemoths that have great difficulty changing direction and keeping up with private sector technology.

Can you believe ATC is still using HF radios for Atlantic crossings while the aircraft are communicating with company dispatch via satellite?

And won’t that be fuuun when sudden power is necessary to avoid a runway emergency — like a collision?

But it’s so worth it if passengers’ lives are sacrificed in the name of the God Of Climate.

Long as you’ve figgered in that spool-up time for any sudden need of power…

Pretty sure TPA just started this. I’m close to an approach and just started noticing how jets are coming in now at what sounds like a low idle. I used to hear them about 30 sec.s out but now it’s less than maybe 10 sec.s and they’re much quieter.
