Endangered listing for Nevada toad in geothermal power fight

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A tiny Nevada toad at the center of a legal battle over a geothermal power project has officially been declared an endangered species after U.S. wildlife officials temporarily listed it on a rarely-used emergency basis last spring.

“This ruling makes final the listing of the Dixie Valley toad,” the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a formal rule published Friday in the Federal Register.

Environmentalists who first petitioned for the listing in 2017 filed a lawsuit in January to block construction of the geothermal power plant on the edge of the wetlands where the toad lives about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Reno — the only place it’s known to exist on earth.

“We’re pleased that the Biden administration is taking this essential step to prevent the extinction of an irreplaceable piece of Nevada’s special biodiversity,” said Patrick Donnelly, Great Basin regional director for the Center for Biological Diversity.

The lawsuit over the original plan to build two power plants capable of producing 60MW of electricity is currently before U.S. District Judge Robert Jones in Reno. It’s already has made one trip to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which refused in August to grant a temporary injunction blocking construction of the power plant the bureau approved in December 2021.

Just keep bringing those illegals in. We don’t need any infrastructure to support ‘em.

I thought environmentalists loved geothermal since it is clean and renewable. I guess toad beats green energy.

Dixie Valley Toad, the Least Tern and Snail Darters. Enviroweenies find animals that we just can't live without.

Seems they all live near projects that greenies don't like (Well, except for maybe windmill farm/bird choppers). What a coincidence.

Environmentalists hate humanity and seek to destroy it. All else is camouflage.

“Environmentalists who first petitioned for the listing in 2017”

It’s purely a coincidence that the toad was considered merely an isolated population of the plentifully common western toad... until 2017.

Just got an email from nvenergy telling us they’re going to do a geothermal facility near Vegas to supply 85,000 homes with electricity. Guess they didn’t chk to see how many homes are in vegas. 🤔

The carbon business is just a ruse. Hydroelectric is clean and renewable, but the greens want to tear down the dams, for the fish and the scenery. Nuclear is completely carbon-neutral, but nuclear is right out! Geothermal that threatens small toads, forget about it! Offshore windmills that spoil the view for the elites, nope.

They want us to live like Medieval peasants, minus the wood fires. Actually, I think they want us dead.

So now that Nevada is trying to start up a clean, no fossil fuel, renewable and reliable power source the Left stops it too. It goes back to what I’ve said for years. The energy policy of the Left is no energy for the common folk. Once they’ve shut down everything but wind and solar, they’ll go after those. Windmills kill birds and solar panels destroy desert ecosystems.

The Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park supplies water to San Francisco. Otherwise they probably would have torn down the dam by now—reportedly it was a very beautiful valley before it was filled with the reservoir water.
