FDA to Allow More Gay, Bisexual Men to Donate Blood
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 30, 2022 | Liz Essley Whyte and Amy Dockser Marcus

Gay and bisexual men in monogamous relationships would be allowed to donate blood without abstaining from sex under guidelines being drafted by the Food and Drug Administration, people familiar with the plans said.

The change would be a departure from U.S. policy that for many years barred men who have sex with men from donating blood at all. The FDA policy originated in the 1980s during the AIDS epidemic when tests for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, weren’t considered sensitive enough to protect the blood supply.

The FDA lifted the ban in 2015 but said gay and bisexual men had to abstain from sex for one year before donating. During the pandemic, amid severe blood shortages, federal officials shortened the abstinence requirement to three months.

The FDA plans to issue the new rules in coming months, the people familiar with the plans said. All potential donors would need to complete an individualized risk assessment, the people said. Canada adopted a similar system in September. Canada’s risk assessment is a form that asks uniform questions regardless of gender or sexual orientation about a potential donor’s medical history, travel and sexual activity.

The FDA’s plans come after an agency-funded study of around 1,600 gay and bisexual men examined whether an individualized-risk assessment would be as effective as time deferrals in keeping the blood supply safe. The study, conducted by three of the largest nonprofit blood centers in the U.S.—Vitalant, OneBlood and the American Red Cross—concluded earlier this year.

Participants in the study were asked whether they had more than one sex partner during specific periods of time, the type of sexual activity they engaged in and whether they used condoms, among other questions.

“We have a strong data set,” said Dr. Brian Custer, director of Vitalant Research Institute

I bet this is more about not "stigmatizing" male homosexuals for their elevated rates of disease than it is about increasing the blood supply.

A homosexual who has buggered many men has endangered their health and his own. He may lie and donate blood to spread his "gift".

The FDA is as concerned about public health as the CDC. Financial support for these organizations has escalated from just being a waste of money to being a grossly harmful waste of money.

We need a pure-blood-only supply for those uninfected by the clot shot.

The donating man might be monogamous but he doesn’t know for sure about his partner.

Gay and bisexual men in monogamous relationships

More propaganda. Such unicorns do not exist.

And folks who had Hepatitis A when a child are still forbidden to be blood donors. Of course they haven’t decided to claim to be an oppressed ‘minority’ yet.

I knew about Ashe but not Asimov, but some Googling confirmed what you wrote. Too bad — Asimov was a prolific man.

So the policy was based on answers to questions?
Sounds as convincing as Pfizer’s “studies” on the vaccine which turned out to be total lies.
And the gubmit wonders why we consider them to be a collection of lying turds.

A homosexual who has buggered many men

Even worse is the sodomite who has been buggered many times by many 'men'.

FDA was smart until waiting for another plague to hit gays before they reduced caution. It’s stigmatizing for only gays to get AIDS and monkeypox so better to democratize those conditions.

I used to be a regular donor, over two gallons lifetime, but not since COVID. They will need to pay me for my pure blood from now on.

Best if you have to have surgery is to bank your blood, I did when I knew I was going to have surgery.

Direct assault against non HIV positive people. ALL people. No guarantee that gay “monogamous relationship” person doesn’t sneak out for anonymous nookie every so often.
Anyone who is sexually promiscuous should not donate blood.

Why don’t we just use some of the alternatives instead… o yeah, the FDA and big blood won’t allow.
I am not accepting blood… after decades in the clinical lab, including big blood and blood banking, I said no a long time ago.
Your health is not more important than leftist virtue signaling.
If it were not politics, why can’t Stefan’s who served in a risk area for mad cow disease donate.
If I had to choose which risk is more dangerous based on science… the men so have sex with men group have astronomically higher risks of one and often more than one dangerous disease.
Testing isn’t going to detect these blood borne pathogens wit the new hep c and hiv medicines which lower the amount of virus to non- detectable levels.
Non detection thresholds mean some level of these viruses may be present but you won’t know.
The war on doing no harm continues.
