I thought someone had slammed a door really hard. Had to go to the USGS (earthquake.usgs.gov) site to check. A real “teacup rattler.”

If I were in that town, any earthquake would get my attention. It could be preceded by a massive quake.

Should have been a 9.2 and included Berkeley.

Lived in the area for 20 years. My home was about 3 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta Quake. Now that was a quake!(6.9):

Like “thecodont” said “door slammer” at 2.9.

(preceded)

Followed?

(I’m guessing you were saying it could precede a massive quake)

Yeah it would get my attention too.

Yep, that was a quake! I was at work in Milpitas, watching the main corridor twist and ripple on my way to opening the door to fab and telling my Vietnamese techs ‘Deedee! Deedee!’ (Vietnamese for get out get out!).

I don’t speak any Vietnamese.

My techs looked at me very strangely for weeks afterwards...

This story is designed to help keep folks from “flyover country” away from California so they don’t take the jobs the illegal alien’s are angling for.

“Well, ya kin rule out Calee-four-nye-eh, Ma; th’ ground out there’s a-fixin’ ta swaller all ‘em heathens right up ‘n’ we don’t wanna get caught in amongst ‘em.”

But I don’t! Took me years to figure out where those words were to even come from to come out of my mouth.

Years earlier in a PBS show about tunnel rats, one told of crawling in a tunnel and coming to a wicker door and very slowly and carefully pushing it open, someone on the other side very slowly and carefully pushed it closed again. He decided to shove it open and throw in a grenade. He told of shouting ‘deedee deedee’ - Vietnamese for ‘get out get out’ - as a professional courtesy.

One phrase, one time, in a toss-off PBS show. Some back corner of my brain provided it when I need it.

I’m spooky that way...

You sound silly

It wouldn’t be preceded by a large quake. It would be followed by a larger quake ( sometimes)
