Some electric car drivers are struggling to find working charging stations — and it highlights a key Tesla advantage

new survey found that 20% of EV drivers visited a charging station without charging their car, due to issues with charging hardware. Range anxiety and the hassle of charging pose major roadblocks to EV adoption. The J.D. Power survey also shows electric car owners prefer Tesla charging stations. Electric cars are getting more popular, but lackluster charging options could turn some drivers away.

A new survey from J. D. Power found that one in five electric car owners that visited a charging station ended up not charging their vehicle. Of the drivers that didn't charge their EVs, 72% said the station was out of service or malfunctioning.

The survey included 11,554 electric and hybrid car owners who responded to the study between January and June of this year. The executive director of global automotive at J.D. Power, Brent Gruber, said that the survey showed that public charging continues to hobble the EV market.

"Not only is the availability of public charging still an obstacle, but EV owners continue to be faced with charging station equipment that is inoperable," Gruber said in the press release.

J. D. Power's study, which was conducted with EV data firm PlugShare, lines up with recent reporting on the EV market. On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that some EV drivers are second-guessing their decision to buy an electric car amid a slew of broken and malfunctioning charging stations. Earlier this year, a reporter from The Wall Street Journal said she took an electric car on a cross-country road trip and often ended up waiting hours on end for the car to charge due to buggy chargers.

I plan on using charging stations that emit Unicorn excrement.

Tesla's huge network of highly reliable charging stations is just part of the huge advantage the company has over the rest of the global auto industry.

Given that the rest of the global auto industry can't even figure out how to do charging stations, just imagine how incompetent they are at designing & manufacturing the EVs themselves. That naturally leads to the big question: Why would any sane person even think of buying an EV from any company other than Tesla?

What? Why would a buggy need a charger, aren't they pulled by a horse? /s

Nice drive, but hardly a lonely road. There’s a car or truck along every few minutes. A lonely road is one where there might be another car that day, or there might not.

Try the 90 miles or so on 70 from Roswell to Portales, NM! Holy Toledo...even at 75-80 mph it seems like an eternity! Nothingness.

The local ferals will strip the EV chargers for the copper wire.

Funny how they never factor these kinds of things into their "pie in the sky" visions.

It’s all about eventually forcing the masses into using public transportation to get around.

Yes.
For which they will have to depopulate the valley where I live and most of Nevada among other states.
Which will also lead to food shortages as we do a lot of agriculture here.
So then the population has to be reduced to compensate.
Of course the elite will not be the ones reduced.

Why would it be easy to remove from a Prius? Those things sit 3 inches off the pavement for aerodynamics.

It’s the trucks that are easy to get under to cut them off.

The EV manufacturers just need to put a small wind turbine on the roof of every vehicle and voila!

My BIL thought that would work. Had to explain the basic laws of energy. Still not sure he's convinced.

They are more exposed when the car is jacked up than most other makes/models.
Only takes less than a minute to steal them.
There is a car donation auction site I visit often, nearly every Prius is missing the CAT.

I don't understand the difference. Like most all fwd cars the exhaust goes down the center tunnel where the driveshaft would be on a rwd car?

If that pic is a Prius notice how clear the exhaust is from obstructions.
A cordless saw only takes moments to cut the pipe.
Other cars have varied heat shields and supports in the way.
Look under a Mercedes, they are almost impossible to get too!

The other issue is that the charging module for Teslas are different than the other brands.

In Europe they have standardized all the EV charging stations.
This is what needs to be done in North America/Central America.

This would be like if Ford had a different size gasoline tank hole than GM. GM had a different one than Honda, VW and Toyota.

EV charging needs standardization. Just like every 110 AC electrical outlet in North America and Mexico is the same.

Not too many gangstas have the rigging tools and ability to get up there is my guess.

They’re more into the low hanging fruit.
