Myanmar tragedy exposes the dirty underbelly of 'green energy'

The people in this northern Myanmar forest have lost a way of life that goes back generations. But if they complain, they, too, face the threat of death.

This forest is the source of several key metallic elements known as rare earths, often called the vitamins of the modern world. Rare earths now reach into the lives of almost everyone on the planet, turning up in everything from hard drives and cellphones to elevators and trains. They are especially vital to the fast-growing field of green energy, feeding wind turbines and electric car engines. And they end up in the supply chains of some of the most prominent companies in the world, including General Motors, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Tesla and Apple.

But an AP investigation has found that their universal use hides a dirty open secret in the industry: Their cost is environmental destruction, the theft of land from villagers and the funneling of money to brutal militias, including at least one linked to Myanmar’s secretive military government. As demand soars for rare earths along with green energy, the abuses are likely to grow.

Reminds me of Occupy Wallstreet. The very well-off thought they would ‘do some good.’ They bought expensive tents and went to spend a few nights with their brethren. They actually brought their very expensive laptops and smartphones, but they were not so smart themselves. After they had set up their fancy tents, they left their expensive laptops in their tents. The regular homeless, indigents, and other opportunists jumped on the chance to increase their loot. When the do-gooders returned, they were outraged at their audacity (and hoped that mommy would buy them another). The outrage and tears on the evening news was precious.

very true yet we are the ones that produce. A great feature of Stalinist Russia was that the wealth was very subjective — There was nothing to buy anyways with wealth/money/power — except freedom from Siberia for your body.

That’s the first I time I heard that story. I haven’t watched any TV News for over 20 years, I don’t watch much TV.

That is priceless. I’ll bet those particular confused basement dwelling Hotpockets eating wannabe dogooders look at life differently now. Many folks who were public school indoctrinated become conservatives after living in the real world for a few minutes.
