Volunteers are scrambling to evacuate civilians from the Lysychansk area as Russian troops close in on the key battleground city in the eastern Donbas. But some local residents refuse to evacuate, siding with Russia in the war. (Click link for 3 minute video report)

Zelensky ran as a populist reform candidate, and was popular because of the character he played on television (sort of similar to Donald Trump).

However, even by 2021, the wave of optimism of his initial candidacy had ceased to be.

Then the Pandora Papers exposed his offshore holdings, and his media team's attempts at course correction only made him seem as though he was just another politician instead of a true alternative. His low approval ratings continued to hold through the end of 2021.

He also ran on a platform of enforcing the Minsk agreements and finally instituting a ceasefire in the Donbas. This did not happen, seeing as how the strikes by Ukrainian military forces in the Donbas were occurring before Russia's invasion.

Using old political voting maps as a proxy for current sentiments can be fraught with errors if not controlled for. However, civil wars (and there are many flavors of civil war to the current conflict between Russia and Ukraine, given that they've been ethnically and legally together in some form or fashion for centuries longer than they've been separate as individual nation-states) tend to be messy in general.

Both Russia and Ukraine use conscription for their armed forces. Criticizing either one for the practice is practically pointless if you’re a partisan for one side or the other.

MORE FOOTAGE OF 240MM MONSTER “TYULPAN” (TULIP) HEAVY MORTAR IN DPR HANDS FIRING ON AZOT FACTORY

[Experts say Russia is firing more artillery shells every ten days than America makes in a year. Now give new eyes to those “stupid obsolete” Russian systems that America and NATO never even built, like this mobile 240mm mortar.]

Again, I am not talking about ZSU conscripts. Russian youths in Russia sign contracts with the government as part of their national service to the Rodina. They are conscripted or ‘drafted’.

In the parts of the Ukraine under their control, Russian troops abduct Ukraine men off the streets and force them to serve (there are no contracts) - forced conscription. Then, literally, send them to die - they have served their purpose and are no longer of no value.

The once Russian supporters in these areas, who cheered the arrival of Russian troops, now hate them with a passion.

The two are not the same.

I am not talking about ZSU conscripts.

It still amazes me how much ammo modern war can chew through daily. I wish I could post pics, those old WWI pics where there is literal mountains of empty arty casings after a pre attack bombardment. Very impressive the amount fired and that human beings on the receiving end were able to withstand such volume.

Russian false narrative. The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine reported that the Ukrainian side suffered more strikes than the Russian side, therefore the Russians were mainly responsible for the continued shelling.

The best source of unbiased data about the fighting in the Donbas comes from the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. Since the OSCE operates on consensus and Russia is a member, the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) must be cautious in how it puts out information. While it reports violations on a daily basis, it does not aggregate them. And most of the violations that it reports are described as “undetermined.”

Still the SMM daily reports, if aggregated, yield useful information beyond the intensity of the ceasefire violations. In May, for example, the OSCE SMM reported that the Ukrainian side suffered the impact of 945 explosions, while the Russian side experienced only 145. The Russians have likewise proved a greater obstacle to SMM staff’s movements. In May, the Russians blocked access to SMM personnel 82 times, while Ukrainians blocked access 54 times. Such data are much more relevant to evaluate the ceasefire than the possible presence of new Ukrainian weapon systems near the line of contact.

If you’re going to quote something, provide the link.

https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/ukrainealert/russia-not-ukraine-is-serial-violator-of-ceasefire-agreement/

Providing an Atlantic Council (strike one) piece from June 2017 (strike two) that doesn’t even provide the data for their aggregated figures for May 2017 (strike three), when the topic is about the period immediately preceding the invasion, is disingenuous.

It also doesn’t help that their figures are flat out wrong. They themselves say that in May, the Ukrainian side suffered 945 explosions, whilst the Russian side suffered 145. That’s for the whole month.

On May 31, 2017, the OSCE reported 530 explosions in Donetsk between the evenings of May 29-30: https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/320681

They reported 270 explosions between the evenings of May 28-29: https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/320326

320 explosions between the evenings of May 27-28, and 330 between the evenings of May 26-27:
https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/320136

So already from a 4-day period, the OSCE reported far more explosions in Donetsk *alone* than what your Atlantic Council piece claims happened for the *entirety* of May.

Your quoted ‘analysis’, such as it is, can therefore be junked without any further consideration.
