The suspected gunman who slaughtered 19 students and two teachers Tuesday at a Texas elementary school fired shots outside the school for 12 minutes before entering, an official said.
Eighteen-year-old Salvador Ramos spent approximately 12 minutes outside of Robb Elementary School firing shots before he walked into the school and barricaded himself in a classroom, Regional Director for the Texas Department of Public Safety, Victor Escalon, said Thursday, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
Escalon was unable to provide any answers Thursday as to why no one stopped Ramos from entering the school, the WSJ reported.

State authorities, including the Texas Rangers, are investigating the Uvalde Police Department amid concerns and questions that officers did not respond quickly enough. Officers were present throughout the attack, with many standing in the parking lot during the 30-60 minute period in which Ramos opened fire. Authorities did not breach the classroom until a staff member gave them a key to unlock the door, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

It keeps changing, and funny, they haven’t released tapes of the 911 calls. If the shooter was taking shots at the funeral home (and other targets) for 12 minutes before entering the school, it’s certain that the local 911 call center lit up like a Christmas tree. That would be enough to send every available cop to the scene, and in a town of 16,000—at that time of day—they should have arrived on the scene in less than five minutes.
And sadly, it looks like most of the local cops were more concerned about securing the perimeter than entering the school and taking out the bad guy. This same “regional director” said today that calls went out for additional weapons, body armor and hostage negotiators (you read that right), as kids were being slaughtered in the classroom. If the director is right, the Uvalde police department didn’t have enough weaponry to go after the bad guy, and no one could find someone with a master key to open the door. Never mind the fact that the principal had one, as did the assistant principal, janitor and (likely) several teachers.
If you buy that story about the key, I can give you a great deal on a bridge in Brooklyn.

After hearing about the need for a key I am pretty confused myself. How does a no-knock warrant work? Does the police SWAT team drop by the day before and ask the resident for a copy of their key?

You are absolutely right, as always. I add only this, back in the 80’s I was living in Israel. 2 gunmen (politically motivated, dedicated to their cause, with a different set of principles, utterly ruthless, young enough to not ask, “Where’s the part in this plan that says I get away?), stormed a school up North, took a single classroom, immediately killed the male teacher, had no concern at all for the terrified young female assistant, and waited for the inevitable armed response. They had over 20 children, and the terrified young teacher’s assistant as hostages. As they became lax about covering the young aide, and both apparently were looking out the window, she drew her 9mm and killed them both. Then kept the door barricaded, because she didn’t know if they were the only ones or there were others.
In the end, the male teacher was the only casualty!
Our teachers need to be trained and armed. There are plenty of combat vets, preferably infantry, that need to be posted at our schools. It will upset our children? Not nearly as much as a mass shooting! A well armed IMMEDIATE response force is realistically required. Anyone that doesn’t see that is part of the problem.

The mayor of Uvalde, TX, is a white Republican male, which is kind of incredible since Uvalde is 82% Hispanic.
The mayor has previously appeared on Tucker Carlson several times to discuss the immigration issue on the Texas border.
My question...
In Texas, is the mayor the chief executive officer of law enforcement in Uvalde?
Or, does that executive authority come from the county or state level?
America is not what it once was, nor is Texas what it once was.

The doors to both the school and the classroom were unlocked. Never should have been.
And they remain unlocked with someone outside the school firing shots for 12 minutes???
