When you’ve probably been taught your whole life by teachers who teach that your country, the U.S., both was, and is, the most evil country in all of human history anywhere because of the enslavement of negroes and the taking of land from natives, then you have nothing to fall back on and nothing to believe in during times when the pro - U.S. side has the upper hand, such as now, and off the rails radicalism is all you have left.
