Russia threatens to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on European border 'when NATO bases appear in Sweden and Finland' as Stockholm now joins Helsinki in confirming they want to join the alliance

Russian state television has said Moscow may deploy tactical nuclear weapons to its European borders if Finland and Sweden allow military bases on their territory after joining NATO.

Sweden's Social Democrats yesterday said they had dropped their opposition to NATO membership only hours after Finland confirmed its intention to join the alliance.

Pundits on Russian state TV responded: 'Their official reason is fear. But they'll have more fear in Nato. When Nato bases appear in Sweden & Finland, Russia will have no choice but to neutralise the imbalance & new threat by deploying tactical nuclear weapons.'

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's security council, said weeks ago that Russia could deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in its Kaliningrad exclave between Poland and Lithuania, in responce to NATO's Nordic expansion.

One of the original supposed rationales for Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February was to stop Nato enlargement - but that plan is now in tatters as both Scandinavian nations say they will seek membership of the alliance.

Stockholm’s formal application is expected to start later today after being debated and approved by MPs. Sweden, which was neutral during the Second World War, stayed out of military alliances for more than 200 years though it forged closer ties with the Brussels-based organisation from the 1990s.

The turnaround by prime minister Magdalena Andersson’s Social Democrat party, which has opposed Nato membership since the start of the alliance, secures a firm majority in Sweden’s parliament in favour of joining. Mrs Andersson said she would consult parliament today before announcing her government’s official intention to apply.

‘Europe, Sweden and the Swedish public are living a new and dangerous reality,' said Ms Andersson, announcing a decades-long policy U-turn. 'The best thing for the security of Sweden and the Swedish people is to join Nato.’

Well it’s obvious regardless what Russia says Nato/Us will continue to do what they choose to. That’s quite clear.

Ukraine should be admitted to NATO, and Finland and Sweden told to get lost.

Sweden and Finland saw no need for NATO all through the Soviet era. Now they want in? Sorry, no.

As an aside, Sweden supplied Germany with materials and rail access during WW2, while Finland fought alongside Germany. In both instances it was a self-preservation, enemy-of-my-enemy situation, but nonetheless, I see parallels here. They see NATO as a convenient club to join, while nations who have paid their dues for decades have to put up for them? No thanks.

NATO surrounds Kalingrad

Kaliningrad was ethnically German, but Russia ethnically cleansed the region, replacing ethnic Germans with Russians, giving Russia an isolated fortress island in the heart of Europe. Kaliningrad is the equivalent of Georgia joining NATO. Why should Europe have to tip toe around Kaliningrad, and ignore Russian nuclear weapons in the Baltics? Russia should have zero say in nuclear weapons in the Baltics, Poland, Finland or Sweden unless they are willing to give up nukes in Kaliningrad. Yet NATO walks on eggshells to appease Russia, and places no nuclear weapons on soil that borders Russia.

So Russia thinks it can drop nuclear warheads on neighboring Finland and the radioactive fallout will just stay in Finnish territory?

Simple as that.
Let me just ask a question.
How do you think that a U.S. president would have reacted to Mexico or Canada joining the Warsaw Pact in the 1970s?

The Kremlin has succeeded where the globalists and the uniparty in DC have failed.......they've made NATO relevant again.

If the Red Army had stayed in Russia, NATO and its evil twin the Atlantic Council would have faded into oblivion.

There is no limit to Russian incompetence these days.
