Kremlin calls Finland's NATO move a threat to Russia

The Kremlin on Thursday said Finland’s push to join NATO is a direct threat to Russia as well as the stability of the European continent and vowed to respond accordingly.

"Finland’s entry into NATO will become a threat to Russia," Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, told Russian media outlets."The next expansion of NATO does not make our continent more stable and secure."

"Of course, all this will become elements for a special analysis and development of the necessary measures in order to balance the situation and ensure our security," he added.

The comments came after Finnish leaders on Thursday urged their country’s officials to initiate the NATO application process "without delay" and argued the backing of the 30-member alliance was vital to Helsinki’s security.

Finland, a traditionally neutral nation in Northern Europe that shares a border with Russia, began to look to the military alliance along with neighboring Sweden after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

That has been the role of the Russian military for 100 years.

Quite frankly the Russians have a history of abusing their military badly to make sure they don't get uppity.

And generally it was the KGB doing it.

And the Russian military has an equally long tradition of selling every bit of equipment they can get their hands on for extra cash.

This does not end well for anyone.

The only ones with an actual history of invading their neighbors since WWII are the Russians. Russia needs to accept that they are no longer a great power and start cooperating with their neighbors instead of trying to dominate them. Notice that France and Poland are no longer afraid of a German invasion? Russia could have the same peaceful relations with its neighbors if it were to recognized that the days of the old imperial Russian/Soviet empires is over.

NATO is pushing harder and harder for WWIII - they’ll get it and regret it. Nobody will be better off for it.

Well, Finland and Sweden will find a nice selection of Intermediate Range nukes pointed at them. Hope they enjoy it!

Wow. I hope they enjoy the cold weather that comes with it.

You know, all the stuff they haven't been experiencing before now...

Nukes that will never be fired!

Russia is weak. All they have is their threat of nuclear annihilation, which would ironically include their own demise as well. Ukraine has proven Russia is not strong from a conventional lens, and nukes will not happen.

And anyway, before joining NATO Finland and Sweden did not have nuclear weapons targeting them, but would still have been greatly affected if a NATO-Russia nuclear exchange happened. Heck, even Swaziland and New Zealand would be affected if a major nuclear exchange happened.

So, there is no real threat difference to Finland and Sweden if they join NATO. It would be exactly the same …but at least now they are part of a strong group.

Russia really should have stayed out of Ukraine. They have absolutely destroyed their menacing image.

The Russian bear has a short memory. They need to look up “Simo Hayha” for starters.

I hope you are correct. HOWEVER, given the decisions made to get their asses kicked in Ukraine, I am concerned that logic and analysis is somewhat lacking or even co.orompromised on the Rooskie side of the equation.

Fine, we let them join conditionally, with the agreement that no troops or offensive weapons will be stationed on their soil.

They will receive the umbrella that is NATO, but we calm Russians fears by not sending a single soldier to them. We help them out by allowing them to arm themselves up to NATO standards (a joke tbh) and put in place plans to rapidly reinforce them (think Reforger) and move troops there only if Russia crosses the border.

That should mollify Russia somewhat, that no offensive weapons systems are placed there, but one wrong move on their part will void that pledge, like stocking bases and deploying armor and troops to their border during a crisis like we have now.

“It is interesting how the Ukraine pushers and neocons don’t seem bothered, ONE BIT, about what’s going on the US,”

What I think confuses you is that you don’t realize some folk have a greater mental capacity than you do.

Most folk are fully able to understand that we have enemies both foreign and domestic and have space for more than one of those in our brains.

I watched a documentary on this Finnish farmer who became a sniper in their war with Russia.

He refused a scope and only used open sights.

The world’s deadliest sniper: Simo Häyhä
With at least 505 confirmed kills during the Winter War of 1939–40 between Finland and the Soviet Union, Simo Häyhä (1905–2002) has been labelled the deadliest sniper in history.

Peace thru appeasement works, right Neville?

Mollify Russia? Where were you during the Cold War? The Soviets failed because they couldn’t keep up, combined with their controlled economy.

NATO marched its tanks up to Putin’s front porch

There NEVER was a NATO army on Putin's "front porch" that was a serious invasion threat.

Russia is thinking of fighting Ukraine AND Finland?

Oh, wait, that was Putin’s plan ALL THE WHILE. Putin is playing 17 dimension chess while we are playing hopscotch.

It’s not appeasement, Russia has legitimate concerns with us breaking our agreement that no former Soviet block country will be permitted to join, we broke that agreement, Ukraine was the final straw.

Surrounding them with offensive capabilities from neighboring countries right on the border is not necessary and will just put us in another arms race. Remember Cuba? We got all pissed off when Russia put missiles that close to our borders, yet here we are doing the exact same thing to them and we wonder why they are getting pissed.

“The only ones with an actual history of invading their neighbors since WWII are the Russians.”

*****

Russia never invaded Finland, it was Finland and the Nazis who invaded Russia.

When the Russians were about to destroy Finland, Finland signed a peace treaty guarantying that would remain ever neutral and not join coalitions that threaten Russia.
