Italian children should be given the surname of both parents, the Constitutional Court said on Wednesday, overturning the tradition by which all newborns are automatically named after their father.
The current practice is "discriminatory and harmful to the identity" of the child, the court said in a statement, adding that both parents should be able to choose the surname.
Children should be given both parents' surnames in the order they decide, unless they agree their children should take just one of them, the court added in a statement.

I look forward to the names of the grandchildren and great grandchildren and gr-gr grandchildren. Will 16 last names be the end of it?
Those Italian names will begin to look like Spanish names.

First marriage the child has two surnames. The child gets married and the couple now has four surnames. They have children and those children get married and end up with eight surnames.
What is the legal maximum amount of surnames one can have? Maybe 1024?
It’s so much easier when you have just one.

So the woman’s father’s last name and her husband’s last name?
I’m sure this will fly with most Italians. /s

Exactly. This starts us down a road where it gets ridiculous.
Let's say Fred Jones and Sally Smith have a child that they name Richard Jones-Smith.
Then Richard Jones-Smith marries a girl named Betty Swift-Kelly and have a child that they end up naming Patty Jones-Smith-Swift-Kelly who then marries a guy named Ben Harris-Cook-Carroll-D'Angelo. Then they have a child that they then name Linda Jones-Smith-Swift-Kelly-Harris-Cook-Carroll-D'Angelo.
You can see how this quickly gets out of hand.

In Iceland, no one truly has a surname.
Your last name is your father or mother’s first name, followed by -son or -dottir.
Magnus ver Magnusson, is Magnus son of Magnus.
Annie Thorisdottir is, Annie daughter of Thoris (Þórdís).

I would hope most sane women would sign a wager, telling the government to
go —— off
Family trees still include the mom’s name on the birth certificate.
No one is kept from recognizing the mom’s heredity.

And marquees of the future will have to accommodate them all. I know or have known of several married couples who have AGREED to use a hyphenated married “surname” for the wife only—who knows who decided first it would be “better that way”? It gives a distinctly British feel to American married names. Interestingly, it’s NEVER the husband who seems to be eager to add HER maiden name to HIS birthname.

I’d like to see MTG rebrand herself as Mrs. Greene.
