SALT LAKE CITY — Orrin G. Hatch, who became the longest-serving Republican senator in history as he represented Utah for more than four decades, died Saturday at age 88.
His death was announced in a statement from his foundation, which did not specify a cause. He launched the Hatch Foundation as he retired in 2019 and was replaced by Mitt Romney.
A conservative on most economic and social issues, he nonetheless teamed with Democrats several times during his long career on issues ranging from stem cell research to rights for people with disabilities to expanding children’s health insurance. He also formed friendships across the aisle, particularly with the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
He also championed GOP issues like abortion limits and helped shape the U.S. Supreme Court, including defending Clarence Thomas against sexual harassment allegations during confirmation hearings.
Toward the end of his career, he also helped pass a federal tax overhaul and pushed for President Donald Trump to downsize two national monuments in Utah as he called for a return to an era of political civility. He became an ally of Trump.

He was responsible for Ruth Bader Ginsberg as well as a host of other evil Clinton appointments. He justified that by saying a President is entitled to his appointments. He recommended her to Bill along with another loser that I can’t seem to recall.

I agree. I believe in the concept of viewing someone’s entire record, and balancing the positive with any negatives.
As someone else here said, to paraphrase, do any of us agree with anyone in public life, or any of our preferred conservatives, 100% of the time, approve of every action they have take, or agree with every position they have ever taken?
It all depends on the criteria, which people use to judge someone by.
Even dead he’s better than his successor. I appreciated his work on the judiciary committee and seeming level headedness.
I flew Senators Hatch and Daschle and their staffs around Macedonia and Kosovo back in 1996 in my UH-60 Blackhawk. As I recall they were decent fellows despite politics.
Funny I was reprimanded by a LTC (I was a newly minted Captain at the time) who accused me and my copilot for flying “too fast and aggressively” with the senators on board. The LTC wasn’t an aviator, he was a protocol rear echelon doosh.
Both senators thanked me and all the crew for a great ride. I flew Madeline Albright a few weeks later, then Sheryl Crow and Sinbad. It was an interesting deployment.

I heard that for the first time here many years ago, and is the first thing I think of when I hear his name.

As per wiki, “On September 16, 1964, Thurmond confirmed he was leaving the Democratic Party to work on the presidential campaign of Barry Goldwater,” and he left the Senate on January 3, 2003, so he was only a Republican for 37 years to Orin Hatch’s exactly 42 years.
If Chuck Grassley loses his reelection in November, he and Hatch will have a 42 year tie for longevity. If he wins, he will become the longest serving Republican on January 4th.
Four democrats and Strom Thurmond lead the list of total service time in the Senate.
He might switch his vote to die at the last minute.

No chance of abuse with those proposals.
I have seen the same basic types of moves even in local government. The big fish always believe that they should have the authority to pulverize the little fish to “teach them a lesson”. The same type of reasoning often results in road rage incidents. This does not speak well of Hatch, it makes it appear that his moral compass went all Clinton on him. God rest his soul.
