Trump is trying to oust one of South Carolina’s rising GOP stars

SUMMERVILLE, SC — Donald Trump, furious at sharp criticism from the Republican representing South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, has endorsed Katie Arrington in hopes of ridding the party of a libertarian-leaning member who was one of the few dissenting voices regarding Trump’s fitness. lead.

The year was 2018. The congressman was Mark Sanford, who had become increasingly critical of Trump for his conduct in office. Arrington, then a state representative, was backed in hopes of unseating Sanford. She did so in the June primary, only to lose the election in the fall.

The dynamic seems to be repeating itself four years later.

Rep. Nancy Mace, RS.C., ousted the Democrat to win the seat and continued to anger the former president, criticizing his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Trump again endorsed Arrington to rid the House of another critic in the competitive suburban neighborhood around Charleston.

“He’s doing it again, because he doesn’t care,” said former Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., an anti-Trump Republican. “He didn’t care about losing that seat. He came to the conference and gloated about it because he didn’t care about winning the general election, he just cared about getting revenge. And now he’s doing it again.”

But that may be where the similarities between 2018 and now end, according to interviews with candidates, supporters and strategists after the race in South Carolina.

Sanford, who had his own complicated political past, was part of the pre-Trump era of the Republican Party;

I have been quite concerned about the disposition of the Trump political operation ever since he contributed exactly zero dollars to the Virginia 2021 GOP sweep, whose coattails he is now riding

RINOs are enemy #1. Hunt them down and destroy them.

All of them.

It's amazing to watch. Far left groups are trying to roust moderate dems from their seats, and Trump is trying to roust moderate Republicans from their seats.

The end result from these is both parties are going to lose the seats. And both the far left groups and Trump are doing it out of straight ego. Both are idiots.

“Deep State, too” . . . and a grotesque, slimy worm. Can’t believe anybody would vote for that creep.

South Carolina (a deep red state) should NEVER be sending moderates. GOP moderates should only come from deep blue states.

"South Carolina should NEVER be sending moderates."

It seems the people of South Carolina disagree with you. They are sending moderates to Congress. I would advise the Republican party to focus on keeping these seats. If a moderate Republican votes with the party 90% of the time, that's better than having a Dem in that seat who will vote with Republicans 0% of the time.

Sanford, who had his own complicated political past, was part of the pre-Trump era of the Republican Party;

Sandford, criticizing Trump for behavior issues while in office, couldn’t keep it in his pants while governor.

Sanford lost his mind over a woman and ran away from home. No one knew where the heck he was. He had a wife and children. But he couldn’t live without Maria.

That’s very encouraging. Kicking Rice and Mace out of the SC delegation and replacing them with Fry and Arrington would be quite sweet.

“The end result from these is both parties are going to lose the seats. And both the far left groups and Trump are doing it out of straight ego. Both are idiots.”

Democrats are not going to pick up any seats in South Carolina just because a real Republican wins a primary over a “moderate”. We can do better than Rice & Mace in SC — and we well. Moderate is the best we can do in some states/districts, but not this one. Before redistricting you may have been right about the Charleston district, but that’s been taken care of now (barring Sanford-style sabotage of Arrington, as happened in 2018).

In fact, exactly which moderate representatives (nationwide) which Trump is targeting are in seats which are likely to flip to the Rats if an actual MAGA conservative wins the Republican primary?

Nancy Mace is a RINO. She will not answer my written correspondence on Ray Epps. She is an establishment Republican.

I have a feeling we will be stuck with Mace. SC people do not pay much attention to politics, and the SC Republican Party is feckless.
