San Diego research links Oroville Dam crisis to global warming
PBS San Diego ^ | March 7, 2022 | By Thomas Fudge

The Oroville Dam in northern California is the nation’s tallest dam and it creates the state’s second-largest reservoir. In February of 2017, an atmospheric river dumped a huge amount of snow then a huge amount of rain into the reservoir’s watershed.

A 30-foot wall at the top of the dam, called the weir, nearly gave way to the volumes of water and 188,000 people had to be evacuated.

“Rainfall from the atmospheric river was enhanced by about 11 to 15 percent by climate change, compared to what it would have been in pre-industrial times,” said Alexander Gershunov, a research meteorologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego.

The year 2017 was the most active year on record for atmospheric rivers in California, according to Gershunov.

The ability of air to hold moisture increases with temperature. The "Earth's Future" article's conclusions were based on climate modeling projections, which show that climate change increased the rainfall at that event.

“It illustrates very well the kind of hydroclimate change that we expect to see with climate change in California," Gershunov said. "Specifically, less frequent precipitation but more intense extremes due to atmospheric rivers.”

Climate change means California’s water supply is becoming more dependent on atmospheric rivers, which are becoming more intense. So researchers hope to be better at forecasting them.

As for preventing more climate change, Gershunov said people need to enter the "next phase in the evolution of humankind" as it relates to our development and use of energy resources.

This MUST be true since *everything* is being blamed on climate change.

The PBS TV station in San Diego is pure leftist propaganda paid for with our tax dollars. Hardly anybody in San Diego watches it. The few people in San Diego who do watch it drive around in cars with license plate frames that say “I Support KPBS.” Oftentimes they have bumper virtual signaling “Co-exist” bumper stickers and old “Biden Harris” and “Bernie” on their cars as well.

It's my understanding, lack of maintenance, which ca is famous for, was cause for failure.

Gotta keep those illegals fed and housed.

We have a drought - it’s global warming!
We have a flood - it’s global warming!
Everything is within normal bounds - global warming is coming!

“Rainfall from the atmospheric river was enhanced by about 11 to 15 percent by climate change, compared to what it would have been in pre-industrial times”

This is a number pulled right from this guy’s arse. Analogous to NOAA “curating” temperature records by adjusting past temps lower to make current temps appear warmer. Some people have no shame.

Are they certain it’s atmospheric rivers?
In these cases there’s usually a white man to blame.

The problem showed up because CA refused to fix the problem when water levels were low.

Well if you "follow the science", the delta of air's capacity to hold moisture is negligible until around 40 deg Celsius (104 F).

So what is the "climate expert consensus" on when global average temps will get that high ???

Maybe they should build another dam up or down river of this to hold MORE water. MORE DAMS = economic prosperity and leads to happy and healthy people. The opposite brings depression and suicide increase.

IIRC:

The spillway of the dam was completely UNDERMINED by ground squirrels, which are prevalent in N Calif foothills. They can burrow for many feet inn many directions. Squirrel condos are common.

When the rains did come, those burrows collapsed, and the spillway had open ground under it. That threatened to collapse the spillway.

All the ENVIROS who moved to outer regions refused to let the squirrels be eradicated.

The rest of the story. With pictures.

From https://lostcoastoutpost.com/2016/apr/6/deal-done-and-dams-are-coming-down-congressman-say/

UPDATE, 2 p.m.: It was suspiciously picturesque at the mouth of the Klamath River today where your Lost Coast Outpost was lucky enough to attend today’s historic, star-studded signing of the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement. We’ve posted a few photos from the event below and, farther down, full audio of the day’s slate of speakers.

While you soak in the imagery, listen to a song played at the end of today’s event. “How We Gonna Take Down the Iron Gate?” was written some years back by local songwriter Petey Brucker with hopes of inspiring, well, essentially what happened today. The recorded version, below, is enhanced by background vocals provided by the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir.

LOL   Of course they did!   Maybe it wouldn't be a crisis if they didn't link it to a NWO manufactured farce made of whole cloth created from a hockey puck, oh I mean a hockey stick.   Mann oh, Mann, what a putz!

I am linking this to the latest Oroville Dam story I could find by FR search:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2EaYubZWwI

Early release for the dam to maintain “storage capacity”. Forgive me I can’t remember every FReepr handle that posted on the spillway threads from 6 years ago.

I note from one of the comments an item that relates to our concerns on FR threads about repairs that did not go far enough. One of the posters says that Gate repairs are planned (one at a time due to environmental concerns for water temperatures) so that future failure we were concerned about may be forestalled.

Does anyone know how to get back to that 2017 thread for the name of that engineer who was heading up the discussion?

That Oroville Dam thread was a heck of a good thread and very informative.

These sleazy politicians who are responsible for this Disaster-Waiting-To-Happen will blame anything including “global warming” or the Man in the Moon or the Bossa Nova.

Someday these lying politicians will be gone and their lying mouths stopped. What a day that will be.
