Time to dismantle some Russian delusions: People apologizing for Putin up the ante. Here are a number of reasons why they're wrong.

With the disintegration of the Soviet Union, everyone breathed easier. Russian communists tacitly, and in some cases openly, acknowledged that Reagan was right about the "evil empire." Religious extreme Marxism followed dinosaurs into extinction. Over a dozen countries emerged from behind the Iron Curtain.

With his attack on Ukraine, Putin shows himself as a species of dinosaur. He believes that Russia, with a GDP smaller than those of California and Texas, is a world power that deserves special spheres of influence. He believes that Russia's nuclear arsenal allows him to claim a more aggressive role than that of a normal European country. Virtually the entire world rejects that claim. We will not be safe from WWIII until Putin, or his successor, accepts that rejection. If not, everyone will be open to Russian bullying, which could easily lead to nuclear war.

Normal European countries neither need nor desire to invade one another. Putin claims to fear that NATO poses an invasion threat to Russia. To be clear, there is no reason to invade Russia. We can dismiss the notion that Estonia wants its troops patrolling the streets of St. Petersburg. Those commodities, including oil, that Russia might choose to withhold can be acquired in quantity elsewhere. The one exception is its pool of superb hockey players. That's important, but it's not worth a war.

That Putin fears the armies on his border means they are doing their job. A deterrent force that isn't feared doesn't serve its purpose. That deterrence is necessary is demonstrated by Russia's multiple attacks on Ukraine and its attacks on Georgia, Chechnya, and others. Putin wants to eliminate this deterrence in order to attack his neighbors. There is no other plausible reason.

“California and Texas don’t have the most nuclear devices in the world.”

True, but I do not think Russia Nuclear Forces are up to the task, after watching how their military preformed in Ukraine.

If Russia was to launch nukes, how many of those would make it off the ground?

How many of them would reach their target?

I am thinking on 25% will reach their targets. Meanwhile USA will have a 75% success rate.

I think, there are some people who know and wants Russia to do it.

RE: But why did he wait until now?

Because the leader of the western world has WEAK leadership ( I would say, senile and bought off as well ).

It’s like Mel Gibson’s character in Braveheart ( William Wallace ). He tells his troops to hold, hold, hold, hold until the opportune time and then he cries — NOW !

It wasn’t impossible for Russians to throw out the communists. It may not be impossible to throw out Putin.

But what will fill the void? If we do nothing, what will it be? If we do something, what will it be?

Russia may be the last stand against one world govt?

RE: The author is the one with delusions.

The way I see this article, The author is talking about who has has the moral high ground.

He is questioning those who tell us that what Putin is doing is morally equivalent to what the West did in recent past invasions.

Are you saying that Putin is justified in his invasion of Ukraine?

I don’t think the author is arguing in favor of us going to war for Ukraine.

California as an independent country lead by Newsom, sharing a border with Russia, having their own currency, & having to finance their own military, regardless of California’s GNP/GDP, would be the weaker nation.

Putin vs Newsom is an absolute joke.

Russia would invade, knocking out 50% of California’s real estate values in a month.

After 3 months the California economy would be kaput.

2 years later California’s energy sector would be improving, with the cheapest gas they had since the 1990’s.

RE: I stopped reading “no reason for NATO to invade Russia”.

Are you referring to the situation today, or the situation before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine?

So, because George Soros said that, the USA and her western allies should do the opposite of what he said?

What’s really going on here?

Bio-weapons research and production - many different players.

We know a lot of our GDP is simply government spending and transfers, and a lot of Wall Street trading - which produces nothing.

Russia certainly has “big government” too, and its population is <half of USA’s - but its currency has been so beaten-down, so disconnected from the world, and so opposite of America’s inflated currency, I believe a direct comparison is difficult.

Raytheon may sell a missile to Fed.gov for $1 million, that Russia itself produces for $100K. Standard GDP measurement would indicate we are 10X bigger in production of missiles than Russia - but is that really the case?

No, that’s not being an apologist
but it’s reasonable to look at issues from both sides
It’s not as if the Obama/Biden/EU policy hasn’t contributed to this mess..

If Soros and the American left are FOR Ukraine and against Putin and Russia then it’s smart money that their position degrades America and traditional western culture.
