California considers banning cigarette filters. Here’s what that could mean for smokers

California lawmakers are weighing a bill that would ban sales of cigarette filters and other single-use tobacco and cannabis products — such as single-use vape pods or cigarillo tips.

Supporters of the bill point to the damage that such products do to both human health and to the environment, with cigarette butts accounting for nearly a third of the trash picked up by volunteers during the annual Coastal Cleanup Day.

The bill would specifically ban the sale or furnishing of single-use filters made of any material, attachable single-use plastic tips that are commonly used on cigarillos, and single-use e-cigarettes or vape pods.

The bill would make the furnishing of such objects a civil offense, punishable by $500 fine.

Most modern cigarette brands are sold with filters. Such brands could not be sold in California under the proposed law. California smokers would have to purchase unfiltered cigarettes, while vape users would have to purchase multiple-use vape devices.

Looks like it was Bolsa Chica State Beach, but it is near Sunset. I spent quite a bit of time down there as a kid, but I don’t think I ever heard that name.

I Googled ‘Tin Can Beach California’ and got this story from the LA Times. https://www.latimes.com/local/la-xpm-2011-mar-21-la-me-0320-then-20110321-story.html

Pictures are what I remember its looking like. Yes, the state bought it and turned into Bolsa Chica State Beach.

“They built cardboard shacks, erected tents and thought nothing of tossing used cans, bottles, paper plates and other debris to the ground.”

LOL, so they just moved it to Venice Beach.

If littering fines were enforced this bill
wouldn’t be needed. I have seen cigarette
butts piled two feet deep in the medians
at traffic light intersections, in LA.

Right, Al.

These people could better spend their time on thinking up how to re-use/recycle cig filters, than just banning them.

Some folks did that before for glass and plastic bottles.

Sounds like the people working that “annual” cleanup DAY only picked up the little stuff.

That could be the 30% picked up that ONE day.

Hooked on Luckies at 14 and went to Pall Mall at 18 on my ship’s Med cruise, because cigs were rationed (and they only cost $2/carton then). ...Been puffing menthol lights for last 25 years. ...Closing in on80 y/o.
