A prosecutor says the parents of a teen accused of killing four students at a Michigan high school were summoned a few hours earlier after a teacher found a drawing of a gun, a person bleeding and the words “help me.”

Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald made the disclosure Friday as she filed involuntary manslaughter charges against Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley.

McDonald says the gun used in the shootings at Oxford High School was purchased by James Crumbley a week ago and given to the boy.

Uh, so... This kid had serious behavioral issues, including serious threats of violence at the school, and his father not only (apparently) bought him a gun, but he had access to others. The kid was flaunting it on social media as, “his.”

He’s 15, and not to have a firearm without adult supervision according to stste law, or so I’ve been told.

Someone has to be held responsible for acquiring it for him.

If “and given to the boy” is true, hoo boy. But how would the State know that? Birthday wrapping paper?

And the mother sent him a text saying “Don’t do it.” My gosh! If they knew their son was so troubled, they should have gotten him help, not sent him to school with a gun.

Based on available information, I would charge the parents. Wouldn’t you?

That IS the state law. Was wondering how the kid went target shooting. Was his dad there? He was supposed to be pretty much at the kid’s elbow.

Unless the parents gave the gun to the kid and told him it was his to do with what he wants, the case is politicized BS.

The real purpose is to impose yet more burdens on lawful gun owners and require every gun owner to keep any firearm locked and unloaded, making it nearly useless for home defense.

If the kid took the family car and ran people over would the parents be responsible for that?....it’s a slippery slope that’s for sure.

Posts by his mother about how the gun was her kid’s “Xmas present,” and posts by the kid showing off “my new Sig Sauer.”

These parents are indefensible, and trying to defend them is a insult to decent gun owners.

“All I can say at this point is those actions on mom and dad’s behalf go far beyond negligence,” she told WJR-AM. “We obviously are prosecuting the shooter to the fullest extent. ... There are other individuals who should be held accountable.”

If they could clearly articulate the reasons for the charges, they would, as any pre-trial publicity would help their case. So I strongly suspect it's bull.

The law is what it will come down to. Not my state, but maybe you know and can post the appropriate part of the statutes that they may be charged with.

There’s no Michigan law that requires gun owners keep weapons locked away from children.

Wouldn't matter, as teenagers would find a way to access the guns. Here in California, the law says we have to lock away our guns if children are present in the home. Annoying law, as my guns are locked in a safe or have trigger locks because I have grandchildren present; delays an effective response while retrieving the guns if required. But kids are smart enough to get through locks; I knew how to pick locks as a teen (I was clever but not a criminal).

The world is full of stupid, enabling parents trying to be friends with their offspring instead of teaching them that real life is full of hard consequences.

If notification of the drawing makes them culpable, then it makes the school culpable too as they let him into the school after finding it.

With all that is known to date I'd have to agree.

This business of parents buying guns for troubled kids has to taper off. Without even trying I can think of three: Kinkle in Springfield, OR, the Florida school shooter, the kid who shot his mom before hitting the daycare.——I’m sure there’s more just gimmee a minute. But if you raise a kid on Ritalin or whatever then think he will mellow out if you just get a gun for him has to deserve gold plated Darwin awards. This pair in Oxford deserve all the hits we can give them!
